IV. The Holy Encounter

19 When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. As you think of him, you will think of yourself. GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER>

1Today we will review these ideas:

[75] The light has come.

2In choosing salvation rather than attack, I merely choose to recognize what is already here. Salvation is a decision made already. Attack and grievances are not there to choose. That is why I always choose between truth and illusion, between what is there and what is not. The light has come. I can but choose the light, for it has no alternative. It has replaced the darkness, and the dark is gone.

3These would prove useful forms for specific applications of this idea:

4This cannot show me darkness, for the light has come.

The light in you is all that I would see, [name].
I would see in this only what is there.

[76] I am under no laws but God's.

5Here is the perfect statement of my freedom. I am under no laws but God's. I am constantly tempted to make up other laws and give them power over me. I suffer only because of my belief in them. They have no real effect on me at all. I am perfectly free of the effects of all laws save God's. And His are the laws of freedom.

6For specific forms in applying this idea, these would be useful:

7My perception of this shows me I believe in laws which do not exist.

I see only the laws of God at work in this.
Let me allow God's laws to work in this and not my own.

INTRODUCTION

WRK Review II Intro

<AUDIO><VIDEO>

Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

1We are now ready for another review. We will begin where our last review left off and cover two ideas each day. The earlier part of each day will be devoted to one of these ideas, and the latter part of the day to the other. We will have one longer exercise period and frequent shorter ones in which we practice each of them.

2The longer practice periods will follow this general form: take about 15 minutes for each of them, and begin by thinking about the idea and the comments which are included in the assignments. Devote about three or four minutes to reading them over slowly, several times if you wish, and then close your eyes and listen. Repeat the first phase if you find your mind wandering, but try to spend the major part of the practice period listening quietly but attentively.

3There is a message waiting for you. Be confident that you will receive it. Remember that it belongs to you and that you want it. Do not allow your intent to waver in the face of distracting thoughts. Realize that, whatever form they take, they have no meaning and no power. Replace them with your determination to succeed. Do not forget that your will has power over all fantasies and dreams. Trust it to see you through and carry you beyond them all.

4Regard these practice periods as dedications to the way, the truth, and the life. Refuse to be side-tracked into detours, illusions, and thoughts of death. You are dedicated to salvation. Be determined each day not to leave your function unfulfilled.

5Reaffirm your determination in the shorter practice periods as well, using the original form of the idea for general application and a more specific form when needed. Some specific forms will be included in the comments. These, however, are merely suggestions. It is not the particular words you use that matter.

LESSON 88
Review II  ~ Lesson 75 and Lesson 76

The common thread in these two lessons is that the only reality is God. We recognize the light when we choose "salvation (healing, forgiveness) rather than attack." (1.2) The light is always there but when we block it, we are not aware of its presence in our minds. We block that light from our awareness when we choose the ego's darkness. When the blocks to love (our judgments and grievances) are gone, we are seeing what is already there and has always been there (the light that is in our right minds). That is all that is real. It is our divine Self. In choosing to forgive, we are indicating our willingness to see what has always been in our minds.  The truth about ourselves is revealed to us through our decision to choose forgiveness rather than attack.  Illusion is darkness and has no power in reality.

When we choose illusions we are choosing nothing. So while we are free to choose illusion, it has no real effect. The only meaningful choice we can make is for the miracle. There is nothing that is in opposition to God, therefore choosing things we think we want in the dream has no effect on reality. None of it has any power except for the power that we give it through our belief. There is no real alternative to the light. When we choose the light, the darkness simply has to go because it is nothing.

Our salvation is already accomplished. We are only reviewing what has already gone by. We are with God now, having never left except in dreams. Now we are dreaming of exile. We are only dreaming this journey. There is nowhere to go. There is only the recognition needed that we have already arrived where we have never left. We are already home. The light has come. But until we are aware that this is so, we will believe in the reality of the dream we are dreaming. We will only know it is a dream when we wake up. We awaken when we recognize that the only meaningful choice available to us is the choice for salvation. Happiness is a choice. When we choose grievances, we are choosing against our happiness. But the choice we make for illusions is the choice for nothing at all.

We will be motivated to forgive when we see no benefit in attack. As we see how attack brings us more guilt and suffering which blocks the light, we become increasingly willing to let it go. When we truly see that we are only hurting ourselves, we see the insanity of our choice to attack. We are always choosing, in each moment, "between truth and illusion; between what is there and what is not." (1.5)  The ego, with all its dark motives and emotions, is not a real option. In other words, while we may think that we are attacking and that our attacks have a real effect, the reality is that nothing is really happening. The end of this dream is certain and inevitable because it has already happened.

Today we practice forgiveness by bringing our attack thoughts of guilt, judgments, hate and fear back to our own minds where we place them on the altar of truth. With healing of these dark thoughts we can see who our brother is as innocent, and accept that same innocence within ourselves.  We see that we are the same Self.  "The light in you is all that I would see (name)" today, because in reality that is the only thing that there is.  But we won't see it without releasing all that blocks it. We won't see it until the judgments we put on others are released.

For our afternoon practice we recognize that the laws of the world only have effect because we believe we are bodies living in the world. In truth, "I am under no laws but God's," (3.1) because there is only God's will and no other. Having made this choice for separation, the laws of the ego do seem to have an effect on us because of our belief in our reality as a body. But outside of the illusion the laws have no effect.   These laws have control over us while we seem to be in this world. They are the rules and laws by which we live and expect others to live as well. We place our belief in these laws. We also believe that investing in these laws is where our salvation lies. We think if we are exposed to germs we will get sick. We think that if we don't eat the right foods and don't take certain vitamins we will not be healthy. We think that if another body leaves us we will be lonely. All of our laws are focused on the body and personality and its well-being and safety. But they are not all immutable and when we question their hold on us, we can loosen our investment in them.

These laws include literally everything that we do in the world. What we eat, how much sleep we say we need, what our rules are for relationships, what we demand and require of family members and  friends, how holidays should be celebrated, how the dishes should be washed, which way the toilet paper should hang, simply myriad of laws that go  on and on. Are they bad? No they are not. They are simply laws that we live by. What is important is not the laws, but our investment in them for our happiness and safety. Jesus is not saying we should feel guilty because we choose to eat foods that we consider good for our health. He is only saying that when we don't feel well, then we must recognize that the source of our suffering is not the food we have or haven't eaten but that it all originates in our minds.

Think about what happens to your peace of mind when someone is in the express line at the grocery store with a full basket. "They aren't following the rules" the ego screams. Crucify!! We have just given ourselves a reason for anger and attack! And yet we are reminded in the course that anger is NEVER justified. It is not that we will not get angry but that the story we tell ourselves about why we are angry is not the truth. We attack because we want to maintain our individuality and our differences. We want to make others responsible for our lack of peace. In other words the reason that we attack is because we want to. We actually want others to betray us.  But while we do justify our anger, Jesus does not want us to see our experience of anger as a reason for guilt. He is only saying that there is never a reason for me to be angry. It is always a choice made by me in the wrong mind to see the cause for my anger as outside of myself because I want to see it that way.

If our laws are broken we believe that our happiness is sacrificed.  We get upset when our laws are not "revered" or at least respected and maintained. The ego is summarized in these two thoughts:

"I am me and you are not" (my needs are important)
"I am end and you are means" (your function is the means for fulfillment of my needs, or my laws)

Because we carry this dual thought system, it is natural that conflict will happen especially since everyone carries the same thought system of 'one or the other.'  We are always vying for ways to have our needs met at someone's expense. And that is the reason that spouses, nations, religions, etc. don't get along. And what is the answer? We need to give up this entire thought system. We need to bring our awareness to all of our laws that we hold sacred and recognize that they are there to serve the body, but we are not our bodies. The basis for our real pain is our choice for the ego, our individuality and our specialness which will always have us looking outside of ourselves for happiness.

"Here is the perfect statement of my freedom. I am under no laws but God's." (3.2) I commit today to join with God's will to work in every situation, and not my own. I can give up my belief in laws that I have made up. I do not have to give them power over me. "I suffer only because of my belief in them." (3.5) Our true source of pain has nothing to do with the world and its laws. Our true pain comes from separation and the guilt that is now in our minds. The only happiness that we will experience is through healing the guilt that is in our minds.

Imagine making up our own laws and then submitting to the power that they exert on us!! And then we suffer as a result of our belief in them. Does this sound like insanity? Our belief in these Laws of Chaos, (T.23.II.) based on guilt, fear, punishment and separation can all be healed by bringing our grievances to the truth. Healing is inevitable because God's laws assure our freedom. And freedom assures our oneness.

But what are God's laws? They are love, extension, sharing, giving, joining, while the ego's laws are about taking, bargaining, attacking, defending, and separation.  In fact, the belief in separation leads to all the ego laws which are all based on our differences, and thus competition with each other.

The healing of every relationship is inevitable because God assures us of that happy fact. And what God assures us of is inevitable because we have the same will. It is just a matter of time before we agree to choose for God and give up our suffering. The end is certain. "Salvation is a decision made already." (1.3)  It was made the moment that the choice for separation was made. That is what the Atonement Principle assures us of. So today, "the light in you is all that I would see (name)." and "let me allow God's laws to work in this, and not my own."

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Eight

The Journey Back

IV. The Holy Encounter

16 Glory be to God in the highest and to you because He has so willed it. Ask and it shall be given you because it has already been given. Ask for light and learn that you are light. If you want understanding and enlightenment, you will learn it because your will to learn it is your decision to listen to the Teacher who knows of light and can therefore teach it to you. There is no limit on your learning because there is no limit on your minds. There is no limit on His will to teach because He was created to teach. Knowing His function perfectly, He wills to fulfill it perfectly because that is His joy and yours.

17 To fulfill the Will of God perfectly is the only joy and peace that can be fully known because it is the only function that can be fully experienced. When this is accomplished, then, there is no other experience. Yet the wish for other experience will block its accomplishment because God's Will cannot be forced upon you, being an experience of total willingness. The Holy Spirit knows how to teach this, but you do not. That is why you need Him, and why God gave Him to you. Only His teaching will release your will to God's, uniting it with His power and glory and establishing them as yours. You share them as God shares them because this is the natural outcome of their being.

18 The Will of Father and of the Son are one together by their extension. Their extension is the result of their oneness, holding their unity together by extending their joint will. This is perfect creation by the perfectly created in union with Perfect Creator. The Father must give fatherhood to His Son because His own Fatherhood must be extended outward. You who belong in God have the holy function of extending His Fatherhood by placing no limits upon it. Let the Holy Spirit teach you how to do this, for you will know what it means of God Himself.

19 When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. As you think of him, you will think of yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose sight of yourself. Whenever two Sons of God meet, they are given another chance at salvation. Do not leave anyone without giving salvation to him and receiving it yourself, for I am always there with you in remembrance of you.

20 The goal of the curriculum, regardless of the teacher you choose, is know thyself. There is nothing else to learn. Everyone is looking for himself and for the power and glory he thinks he has lost. Whenever you are with anyone, you have another opportunity to find them. Your power and glory are in him because they are yours. The ego tries to find them in yourself because it does not know where to look. The Holy Spirit teaches you that if you look only at yourself, you cannot find yourself because that is not what you are.

21 Whenever you are with a brother, you are learning what you are because you are teaching what you are. He will respond either with pain or with joy, depending on which teacher you are following. He will be imprisoned or released according to your decision, and so will you. Never forget your responsibility to him because it is your responsibility to yourself. Give him his place in the Kingdom, and you will have yours. The Kingdom cannot be found alone, and you who are the Kingdom cannot find yourselves alone.

22 To achieve the goal of the curriculum, then, you cannot listen to the ego. Its purpose is to defeat its own goal. The ego does not know this, because it does not know anything. But you can know this, and you will know it if you are willing to look at what the ego has made of you. This is your responsibility, because once you have really done this you will accept the Atonement for yourself. What other choice could you make? Having made this choice, you will begin to learn and understand why you have believed that when you met someone else, you had thought that he was someone else. And every holy encounter in which you enter fully will teach you this is not so.

23 You can encounter only part of yourself because you are part of God, Who is everything. His power and glory are everywhere, and you cannot be excluded from them. The ego teaches that your strength is in you alone. The Holy Spirit teaches that all strength is in God and therefore in you. God wills no one suffer. He does not will anyone to suffer for a wrong decision, including you. That is why He has given you the means for undoing it. Through His power and glory, all your wrong decisions are undone, completely releasing you and your brothers from every imprisoning thought any part of the Sonship has accepted. Wrong decisions have no power because they are not true. The imprisonment which they seem to produce is no more true than they are.

24 Power and glory belong to God alone. So do you. God gives whatever belongs to Him because He gives of Himself, and everything belongs to Him. Giving of your self is the function He gave you. Fulfilling it perfectly will teach you what you have of Him, and this will teach you what you are in Him. You cannot be powerless to do this because this is your power. Glory is God's gift to you because that is what He is. See this glory everywhere to learn what you are.
