The primary reason for moving to a reservation system is that it is better for the resident wolves. An online reservation system will allow Wolf Haven the flexibility to reduce the overall number of guided visits offered weekly, resulting in more down time for the resident wolves.
As a sanctuary, Wolf Haven follows a philosophy and a guiding principle that considers all aspects of an animal's well-being and ensures that they are treated with compassion, respect and dignity from the day they arrive until their end of days. A sanctuary commits to the highest level of care, and every action or procedure is examined to ensure that it best serves the animals living there.
Wolves by nature are extremely social animals - with one another - but not necessarily with humans. At Wolf Haven, only those wolves that appear the most comfortable around people are seen during 50-minute docent-led walks through the sanctuary.
Pre-booking also gives Wolf Haven the ability to maintain a predictable number of guests per visit. Groups can be maintained at a comfortable size of 20 people or less. The previous system of selling admission at the door occasionally resulted in disappointment, for example, if the group at a particular time was sold out, or the sanctuary was closed that day. Group size also varied widely, with anywhere from zero to more than 30 individuals showing up at a time.
"We believe that a reservation system will enable Wolf Haven to remain committed to providing the highest level of care possible for our resident wolves, while still giving people the chance to see and learn more about these magnificent animals." said Wolf Haven board president John Sleeter.
Wolf Haven's mission is "to conserve and protect wolves and their habitat". Wolf Haven is one of only two wolf sanctuaries in the U.S. to be accredited by the American Sanctuary Association (ASA). The sanctuary is currently in the process of seeking Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) standing.
