J A N U A R Y  2014

null January 10, 2014

Greetings from Midland and Happy New Year!

Students navigated numerous flight delays and weathered the recent countrywide deep freeze to begin classes on Monday January 6th.

Thoughtful and needed improvements are underway on Midland's Farm. Before leaving in December, Ben Munger '79 and his students razed the well-worn garden shed. Over the winter break, Jim Quick '68 and his construction crew began the site work for a new farm building with contributions made by Milt Frye '62 and his family. The new building will store produce, seeds, and farm tools safe from the elements and mice.  Students will continue to wash vegetables in the garden before carting them off to the kitchen. The additional square footage and the sizeable porch will create a useful space for gatherings and classes. Ben said, "I guess the farm is not an experiment anymore."  With his hard work and vision, the integration of the farm into Midland daily has established permanence in our operations and curriculum. The food we grow, the land we tend, the cattle we graze, the solar panels we install are all part and parcel of an integrated educational approach to learning, preparation for college, and preparation for life.

As we look ahead to the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration, on January 20, 2014, we will spend the day with Caitrin McKiernan '98 and her father and filmmaker Kevin McKiernan. After viewing their film, Bringing King to China, they will lead the school community in a discussion. In addition, Jose Juan Ibarra '87 and the Midland students that recently attended the NAIS People of Color Conference, will also lead the school in a MLK Jr. Day panel discussion.

Yes, we are back, and the bar is set high. How we treat the place, and how we treat the property, speaks volumes about how treat each other. The lessons taught in the community, the classroom, or in the garden, are all grounded in the lessons of Martin Luther King, Jr.; we do strive to treat others as we truly wish to be treated, and we pass those lessons on year after year.
