Experience the renaissance of the arts culture in Downtown St. Joseph

Every month, it seems, there is something new "brewing" in downtown St. Joseph. From artist displays and poetry readings at the Cafe Pony Espresso, to the creation of the new performance venue, Paradox Theater, downtown is certainly experiencing a renewed energy
in the form of creative and performance arts.

The Paradox Theater (image at top) recently opened in February at 107 N 6th. Billed as a "venue, studio, canvas, theater, living room and church," the theater is striving to be a place where people can come together as a community and create art in all forms, whether it is music, drawing, painting, dance, photography, film or drama. The beautiful location is housed inside a renovated downtown building. It is also the location of the Make 12 Church.

Events coming up at Paradox include a Magic, Music and More Cabaret performance on Friday, March 21 at 7:30. Hear some great local talent sing, dance, and have a magical time with magicians David Sandy and Lance Rich! Tickets are $10, but the Paradox is promoting a special Buy One Get One offer.

include First SaturdaysThis monthly event takes place in historic downtown, amid the unique and locally owned retail shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Each month, participating businesses display various forms of art within their locations, attracting patrons of the arts from St. Joseph as well as surrounding communities. Many of the businesses also host poetry readings, film festivals, and live music during the event.

Other locations downtown that regularly host performance and visual arts include live bands at Fosters Martini Bar & The Lucky Tiger....jam sessions at Drum Monkey Percussion & Magoon's Delicatessen...and art exhibits at The Glass Eye Gallery at Tobiason Studio and just a bit east of downtown, at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.

For anyone wanting to try their hand at creating their own art, the Albrecht-Kemper will be hosting Arts and Carafes: a fun evening of paint and wine on Thursday, April 24th, 2014. Guests will enjoy appetizers, sweets, and favorite beverages as they paint their very own watercolor masterpiece. Wine available for $5.00 a glass, or by the bottle. No previous art experience necessary and all levels of ability welcome. Artist Dorothy Tietz will lead the group through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions. Tickets are $35/person and will include all of your supplies, snacks, and artwork to take home.

We would be remiss if we didn't mention the fabulous Missouri Theatre as a performing arts venue. Designed by Boller Brothers, this 1927 movie palace was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.  Now it now serves as the cultural center for arts and performance groups in St. Joseph.  Upcoming events at the Missouri Theatre can be found on their calendar of events
