The Center Moves to the Center                             by Dr. Gary Gunderson

The Center for Congregational Health, known for two decades for its powerful consulting with congregations in many states, is be

Gary Gunderson
Vice President
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center

coming the center of a strategy for advancing the wholeness and health of entire communities of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The new strategy brings together 90 years of innovation in faith and health with a sharp focus on the role of congregations as agents of healing in their neighborhoods, especially those facing the greatest challenges of poverty, race and poor health. FaithHealthNC is the emerging network of  hundreds of congregations underway in the Piedmont communities of North Carolina, but already attracting national attention. The Center for Congregational Health, Inc. will adopt a new name, FaithHealth Innovation, and be the consulting, and technical assistance resource underneath the field network. Readers of DoorPost will continue to be part of the ongoing learning community.

The Kate B. Reynolds Trust has announced a $428,636 grant to FaithHealth Innovations for the purpose of extending the FaithHealthNC network into the poorest mountain counties of the state. The strategy, directed by Dr. Chris Gambill, rests on the long experience of CCH in helping congregations clarify their strategic mission and nurture clergy in their leadership roles. FaithHealth Innovations will also expand CCH's traditional networks by serving as the secretariat for a network of more than three dozen faith-based healthcare systems, Stakeholderhealth.org, embracing similar congregation and community strategies nationally.

The legacy of Center for Congregational Health will continue to thrive in several new ways. The extensive work in congregational consulting and coaching will mostly transfer to a new organization led by Dr. Bill Wilson who will be leaving Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for this ministry. It will use the same weblink www.healthychurch.org, but work as the Center for Healthy Churches. We regard this as a sister ministry operating as a separate entity.

FaithHealth Innovations will continue to be the hub of the work in training and coordinating interim minsters under Dr. Les Robinson's leadership. Rev. Beth Kennett will focus her work in leadership development on the major new role for clergy in advancing the health of their members and communities. The close partnership with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's Fellows Program will continue as well as the Young Leaders' Program.

Ninety years ago the Baptists of North Carolina invented a hospital they believed would fulfill God's goal for health and wholeness for the whole state. This became a huge Medical Center in Winston-Salem which included a division linking faith to health in highly creative ways: the first Clinical Pastoral Education in the South, the largest counselling network of counselling centers (CareNet) and the Center for Congregational Health, Inc. Each reflects a key to the fulfillment of the original prophetic  vision.  The 21st century now needs all those innovations to be aligned so tightly that they become one focused strategy operating across the state at full scale. That dream of people of faith creating healthy communities is now back at the center of the Medical Center's strategy.

In the next issues of the DoorPost, Bill Wilson will provide more information about the new Center for Healthy Churches
