commissionerNews and Notes from Commissioner King
Dear Colleagues,

At its meeting in February, a Board of Regents Work Group presented 19 options to improve the implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards at the State and district level in a Report entitled The Path Forward: Common Core Learning Standards, Assessments, and Teacher & Principal Evaluation in New York State.

Please read this memo which provides additional information about the three adjustments that are relevant to the State assessments component of the Report. Comprehensive field guidance will be shared as the various components of the Regents' Work Group Report are finalized and implemented.

Sincerely,

John B. King, Jr.
Commissioner

cteConnecting Parents to the Common Core
East Moriches Superintendent Chuck Russo & Professional Development Coordinator Emily Peterson
Looking back on last year, East Moriches Superintendent Chuck Russo can see where the attempt to inform parents about the Common Core went wrong. "We tried the traditional approach of bringing in an outside person to speak to our parents about the Common Core - to explain what it is and where it's going. That approach had minimal success, at best."

"Honestly, it didn't go well," agreed Emily Peterson, Professional Development Coordinator at the district, which is located on Long Island. "Attendance was sub-par and it wasn't geared for parent talk."

cteSign Up to Apply to Become an edTPA Scorer
The edTPA is our new teacher performance assessment for candidates pursuing certification in New York State. It was developed by Stanford University faculty and staff at the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) with substantial advice from teachers and teacher educators. Teacher candidate portfolios are scored by K-12 teachers, administrators, National Board-certified teachers, teacher education faculty, and clinical supervisors of student teachers. For more information about the edTPA or to apply to be considered as a possible scorer of teacher candidate portfolios, see the edTPA flyer.
