SUMMERTIME & THE LIVING IS EASY!
Paraplegic Goofy, here with animal care specialist Krissy, loves to swim in the Apple River

Overall it has been a lovely summer at Home for Life. It seems like the season is running about a month behind with even our flowers in our many gardens not having bloomed until late July - but in time for our open house July 27.  The week before the open house we had hot and humid weather perfect for cooling off in the Apple River which runs along the west side of Home for Life's property.  Photographer Mark Luinenburg got some great summer photos of the animals enjoying the warm weather at the sanctuary and swimming in the river. Many of our paraplegic animals benefit from the opportunity to exercise by swimming in the river's current where they are weightless and buoyant. See Mark's album of summer photos from the sanctuary.

Our flowers were in bloom for the open house: if only the weather cooperated. July 27 went down as the coldest day on record for the month: barely 50 degrees with a driving cold rain. We couldn't have had worse weather for the event unless a tornado had gone through the sanctuary. Despite the challenging conditions, the event was a success with a great turn out for the open house and Memorial Garden ceremony with Reverend Candee Moser and Herb Sam, Native American Spiritual adviser officiating. The weather scared off most of the riders but there were a few brave motorcyclists who didn't let the rain and cold deter them. Their odds of winning a Caribbean trip were greatly increased as a result! Thanks to Ann and Bill Pease of the Hitching Post and Steve Oanes of St. Croix Harley Davidson for leading the intrepid riders. See more photos from the 2013 Open House.
