Westminster Students Have Olympic Dreams
In 2010, 14 Westminster students  competed in the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. With one Westminster undergraduate already named to the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team, the college is keeping a watchful eye on several other students who are competing for a chance to fulfill their Olympic dreams during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. During the Olympic Trials in Park City in December, Westminster junior Jessica Jerome stole the show, taking first place in the competition and earning a spot on the inaugural Olympic Women's Ski Jumping Team. With nearly 100 Westminster students currently on or retired from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Teams, Westminster is rooting for all those who are hoping to "go for the gold" this February. Westminster is the Official Partner of Higher Education to U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. USSA athletes study a variety of subjects, from art to chemistry. They also have an impressive collective GPA of 3.56. These talented student-athletes learn to balance their rigorous training and competition schedules with their academic courses. Student's Dreams Stretch from the Olympics to Sundance Film Festival
 Check out this television news story about the film project "Far From Home," created and produced by Westminster students Brolin Mawejje, Phil Hessler, and Galen Knowles. The film documents the life of Ugandan Brolin Mawejje as he goes for gold and works to graduate as a pre-med student.

Academic Advising
 Academic advising is as close as Carleson Hall, where the START Center is located. START Center staff and peer advisors are available to help your student with questions, tutor information, time management tips, etc.
The START Center is open from Monday to Thursday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Friday, 8 AM-5 PM. Drop in any time for quick help or call 801-832-2280 to make an appointment.Your Westminster student can also easily stay "in the know" on critical dates and deadlines, academic advising information, graduation, registration, how and when to get a faculty advisor, and much more by opening emails sent periodically that are titled "PATHFINDER IMPORTANT."

Gore School of Business Announces New Endowed Chair in Business Innovation
 Michael Pacanowsky, Ph.D., has been named to hold the Gore-Giovale Chair in Business Innovation. Westminster Alumni John and Ginger Gore Giovale provided $2 million to endow the position within the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business, which celebrated 25 years at Westminster in September.
Pacanowsky brings 20 years of higher education experience and 17 years of practicing the Gore culture--an organizational innovation at W.L. Gore & Associates renowned for its interconnected, nonhierarchical structure. Prior to joining Westminster, Pacanowsky was an Associate at W.L. Gore & Associates, responsible for significant strategic change initiatives. He helped leaders and emerging leaders understand the Gore culture more thoroughly and learn how to weave the practice of the culture into daily work-life.
"Working at W.L. Gore & Associates was a transformative experience for me," said Pacanowsky. "This organizational environment has huge potential for employees, their families and their communities. I'm excited to offer some insights and further infuse the Gore culture in the Gore School of Business at Westminster."
The Gore School of Business prides itself on fostering an interactive, collaborative environment where students gain real-world experience through internships and working with industry professionals from private, public, and non-profit organizations. The school is home to the Center for Financial Analysis, the Executive Leadership Lecture Series, and the Sam and Aline Skaggs Flight Operation Center.

Westminster Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day
 The day's program will kick off with a march through Sugar House starting at 10 AM on Monday, January 20 in front of Converse Hall. Following the march, the college will host an event with the Black Storytellers of Utah and the G. Brown Quintet at 11 a.m. in the Gore School of Business Auditorium.
The event is hosted by Westminster's Diversity and International Center and is free and open to the public. On January 22, the Westminster community will also participate in a service project at Central Park Community Center where participants will paint offices and move equipment.

Parents Are Giving Back
 "As parents, it is reassuring to see professors support their students beyond the classroom. We were pleased about that and wanted to show our appreciation, and that is why we decided to contribute this year," wrote Connie Zweifel P'16. Connie and Matt Zweifel's daughter Hannah is in her second year at the college. Hannah is in the Honors Program and majoring in science.
"As Utah residents, we really value the presence of Westminster in the state. My daughter has benefited from meeting students of different backgrounds from other states and countries. It broadens her world view," she said.
Matt is the archaeologist for the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, and Connie is the archaeologist for the Kaibab National Forest on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
"Many Westminster faculty members approach their relationships with students with mentorship in mind. We recognize that as a small liberal arts college, Westminster is more focused on teaching than research. So, we thought that even a small donation to the neuroscience program through the Parents Fund might be helpful."

 The Westminster Freshman-Sophomore Living Experience is designed to provide students with the best possible college experience. On-campus living promotes greater community, transition to college life, and facilitates positive first and second year experiences.
