Cold War turns hot with Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm!

After the end of World War II, Europe spent years recovering from the losses and the terrible consequences of the conflict. A whole continent found itself divided into two blocs: one lead by the United States with NATO among its allies in the Western bloc, and in the Eastern bloc lead by the Soviet Union along with the Warsaw Pact.  Separating the two, an "Iron Curtain" formed of high walls and minefields as well as hundreds of thousands of well armed troops.

This was the Cold War, a forty year state of political and military tension between two superpowers that several times came close to starting World War III.  While the world survived the Cold War, the effects of the "long twilight struggle" still echo in the geopolitics and military technology and tactics of the present day.

For those like you with an interest in tactics and strategy can the Cold War still turn hot? Of course it can, thanks to On Target Simulation's new "Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm"!

"Basically what we are trying to do is create a Dynamic WEGO (simultaneous turn) system. Based on the readiness of your forces, jamming, and the loss of headquarter units, the time between issuing new orders will vary over the course of the battle" says Robert Crandall, of OTS.  "In Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm you will be the commander of either NATO or Soviet forces locked in battle on the ground in Central Europe. As commander, it is your task to provide the battle plan orders to your units. You will need to think on the fly and adjust to the ever changing flow of battle".

Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm features an innovative asynchronous turn structure that models the OODA loop, huge maps, hundreds of meticulously researched platforms and weapons, detailed orders of battle, realistic modeling of modern combat including armor, infantry, helicopters, airpower and chemical and nuclear weapons, 3 campaigns and over 20 single scenarios, realistic weather conditions, modding options and much more! And you cannot miss this game!

You don't have to take our word for it though. Here are few examples of the reactions from some of our numerous beta testers:

The Plodder (Richard Lloyd)

"Oh, and it's awesome just playing again after working on the tour, it still has that "one more turn" feel."

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3419214

"Finally, I just want to say that you guys have created a truly awesome wargame here, one of the best I've ever played,"

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3425115

21Sec (David Whitt)

"All I've said so far is I look forward everyday to getting home from work, getting kids asleep, and finally getting a chance to play. Guess that peaked his interest. Lol!"

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3410712

Beachinnole (Al Sandrik)

"I remember when you first show cased the game on the public forum and I thought now that is the game I have been looking for since "Tanks" and it reminded me of the Old GDW "Assault" series of games. I have not been disappointed on either count . The game is simple, easy to get into with great replay ability. That said, once in there is a lot of great detail like Shoot-n-Scoot for the artillery. As I play I learn something else about it with each playing and that is also a good thing . I still look forward to playing it each time I game and I haven't found myself wanting to play some old favorites like SPMBT, and the Tiller Modern Campaigns series yet . Additionally, I have to tell you I'm looking forward to the next expansion so I've been gaming now for 40 years and IMHO this is a winner"

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3398675

MikeGER (Michael Motzkus)

"FPRS has absolute the 'only one more turn'-quality!

(yesterday eve i had to pick up someone at the airport and really had to 'Move Hasty'  on the Autobahn to make it just barely in time because of 'just one turn'

I was at the gate-exit from customs a few minute before the person appeared, Phew! )

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3368521&mpage=1&key=airport

Jack54 (Jack Herling)

"there is great feel for the 'different units' in the game. The developers really deserve a lot of credit for not taking the EASY way out. This game is WEGO not IGOUGO... there is 'stacking' and not a 'simplified 3 units to a hex' it matters what's there. Units are very different and not just given a strength point,ie 10 or 15. All of this increases the programming difficulties. So Bravo!"

"This is the one I have been waiting for; I love that they started with 'Europe' in the 'COLD WAR ERA' but I can hardly wait to see this system operate in the Middle East with the Arab Israeli conflict or even the more recent stuff. My hope is that they make 'A LOT of MONEY and find it worthwhile to continue developing the system. If half of the things on the 2.1 wish list come true it will be absolutely AWESOME! Thanks!"

Beta Tester The Plodder did also a  Google Earth Battlefield Tour of the game. It will take you through the background of this alternate World War III, allow you to review the force dispositions of the NATO and Warsaw Pact, walk you through the main Soviet and Warsaw Pact attack corridors and allow you to browse every stand-alone and campaign scenario included in the game, showing where each in-game map fits on the actual map of Western Europe. You will just need to install Google Earth on your PC to enjoy it.

To know what lies behind the curtain of the game you can also read some interviews released by the developer on Grogheads and on The Wargamer.

Want more?

Our beta testers have also written a number of After Action Reports (AAR's) detailing scenarios and how they play out to give a readers a good feel for the game. Here are a couple of examples.

  • Beta tester Al Sandrik has written an AAR featuring the 11 Bravo Scenario.
  • Beta tester Scott  "Splusmer" Udell has written an AAR the Ate Up Scenario, a medium-length scenario played as NATO.

          Espaa 1936

The Spanish Civil War is one of the most important, yet often forgotten, conflicts of the 20th century. When the Republicans and the Nationalists started the conflict in 1936 Europe was on the verge of collapsing into the worst war it had ever faced. Throughout the three years of hostilities the Iberian peninsula lived through a time of political and social turmoil.

It is 18th of July 1936. The Spanish army has risen in arms against the democratically elected government. Elements of the army together with militias will defend the Republic from this military coup. Outside influences are also at play and the Axis powers will help the Nationalist Rebels, while the USSR will assist the Republicans. A civil war has begun but it is also a proxy war between two super powers. Sons of the same motherland, two factions vie for power. Only one will survive.

Developed by Ageod (www.ageod.com) Espaa 1936 features the well-know AGE game engine with a turn-based WEGO system, and covers the entire Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939. The player will find more than 200 regions complete with cities, roads, weapons factories, weather types, factions and sub-factions. The game includes a tutorial, a Grand Campaign covering the whole conflict plus the Fall of the North scenario, a host of historical leaders, units and events.

Espaa 1936 is the result of deep and detailed research on the history of Spain and is developed by Spanish developers, to provide a strategy game which really focuses on the key issues of this conflict.

  • "What if" Caesar's Revenge 44 BC  This scenario is an hypothetical situation which simulates the campaign that Caesar had planned against the Parthians, before his assassination during the Ides of March 44 BC. Here is an After Action Report made by Philippe Thibaut featuring this Scenario.
  • Marcus Antonius 40 BC  This scenario covers the great Parthian offensive against the Roman East at the time of Marcus Antonius in 40 BC, and Rome's counter-offensive led by Ventidius Bassus.
