Christmas Tree Recycling - Westland residents can drop off their Christmas tree at the Recycling Center at the DPS building located at 37137 Marquette during regular operating hours Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm, Wednesday, January 2  through Wednesday, January 16. Trees should be free of decorations. All trees received will be chipped and will be recycled for use at the City of Westland Community Garden and other locations. For more information please call 734-728-1770. Christmas trees are also being picked up at the curb for two weeks starting in January following the Christmas holiday. 

  

Buddy Up 2.0 - Allen "Buddy" Shuh, a local resident and finalist from season 13 of NBC's "Biggest Loser," will present his "Buddy Up 2.0" program for FREE and will allow residents to join together and get healthy during winter months.  The program lasts for 7 weeks and kicks off on Saturday, January 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with registration at the Westland Friendship Center located at 1119 Newburgh.  

 

Parenting Workshop - Starfish Family Services Early Learning Communities presents a monthly Parenting Workshop/Early Childhood Training at the Westland Library on Monday, January 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  This month's topic is "Baby Moves" (#19): Movement Activities for Infants and Toddlers.  Attend 5 workshops and your child is eligible to receive free books from the Imagination Library.  Free childcare is provided for participants.  The workshop takes place in Meeting Room B of the William P. Faust Public Library located at 6123 Central City Parkway.

 

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location. 

-There will be a meeting of the Tax Increment Finance Authority on Tuesday, January 14 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall located at 36601 Ford Rd.

 

William P. Faust Public Library Hosts Getting Healthy Series - Make good on that New Years resolution with us as we present a number of programs aimed at helping you get healthier. Our Getting Healthy series consists of cooking, exercise, inspiration, and stress management programs throughout January. Check their Events page for more information (there are even Get Up and Move programs for kids).  Join Westland native and Biggest Loser contestant, Buddy Shuh, as he talks about his experiences on the show and how he was able to make significant changes in his lifestyle to become more healthy on Wednesday, January 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Get fitness and diet tips, and also learn about Buddy's city-wide health initiative, Buddy Up! Mr. Shuh will also have copies of his book, The Story of Bella, available for purchase after the program.  The William P. Faust Public Library is located at 6123 Central City Parkway.

 

Starfish Litter Learners Playgroup - Starfish Early Learning Communities presents this FREE Program at which children and their caregivers will enjoy interactive time together that includes stories, songs, group activities, play time and a snack.  This program is for children ages 1-4 and their caregivers and takes place on Thursday, January 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room B of the William P. Faust Public Library located at 6123 Central City Parkway.

 

Commodity Food Distribution - The City of Westland will be distributing surplus federal food at the Dorsey Community Center on Thursday, January 16 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  The Dorsey Center is located at 32715 Dorsey.

 

City Offices Closed - Westland City Offices will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  This includes the 18th District Court and the William P. Faust Library.  Garbage and recycling pick up will not be effected. 

 

MLK Ceremony -  In commemoration of the life, legacy and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader and pastor who dedicated his life to seeking equality for all people, the City of Westland is hosting Western Wayne County's annual MLK Ceremony on Monday, January 20 at 10:00 a.m.  The Ceremony will be held at the Annapolis Park Church of Christ, located at 30355 Annapolis, south of Michigan Avenue, between Henry Ruff and Middlebelt Roads. The Ceremony will reflect Dr. King Jr.'s vision for a nation of equality for all races and religions through inspirational performances, artistic representations and uplifting speeches.

 

Mike Modano Ice Arena - The Mike Modano Ice Arena offers an open skate on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. and a Glow Skate every Friday night from 7:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m.   The Mike Modano Ice Arena is located at 6210 Wildwood.
