Celebrating Equality, As Far as it Goes

August 26 was Women's Equality Day, so designated because it's the date that women's right to vote was secured with the final adoption of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. CAWP marked the day graphically. To see how close women are to equality in elective office, look here.

Ready for 2014 (and 2013)?

CAWP director Debbie Walsh spoke at a Women's eNews panel on "Women and Politics: Looking Forward to 2014." Audio from the panel is available here and more information on women in the 2014 elections is available on CAWP's website. And don't forget that New Jersey and Virginia hold gubernatorial and state legislative elections in 2013 (and Massachusetts has a special congressional election); candidate info for all of those races is available here.

Out of the Kitchen and Into the Cabinet
The New York Times' Annie Lowrey quoted CAWP director Debbie Walsh in a report on the representation of women in President Obama's cabinet and in cabinet-level positions (which vary from administration to administration). Eagleton Institute Alumna Running for Congress

Heidi Hall, a graduate fellow from Eagleton's Class of 1989, is a 2014 candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Northern California. Who else might turn up on a ballot near you? Check The Buzz on CAWP's website often to see who's in the running; new names are added weekly!

More Women Wanted: Katrina vanden Heuvel makes the case for recruiting and supporting more women candidates, arguing that women's full equality is not possible without women making policy decisions.

Women and the GOP: Garance Franke-Ruta (The Atlantic) asks whether the GOP can solve its "woman problem" before the 2016 presidential race, citing research and data on the dearth of Republican women candidates and trouble with GOP messaging to women.

Presidential Honors: Feminist activist Gloria Steinem will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, later this year. Congratulations, Gloria!

Running while Pregnant: Sally Kohn asks candidates and experts about "the broken-water ceiling" in politics, citing the unique challenges presented to women who run and serve while pregnant.
