In this week's Hotline, we have information on two upcoming webinars that might interest you.  The first covers basic marketing concepts and the second explains the changing world of data security. We are also giving you a "heads up" on an exciting campaign that begins this summer promoting the value of paper and print.

Marketing Webinar - June 11

Marketing is everywhere; pick any word in business and attach marketing to it and there you have it. Or do you? The definition of marketing has not really changed but it has certainly become overwhelmingly confusing due to the commercialization of the term.

In this upcoming webinar we've partnered with our Pennsylvania PIA affiliate (Graphic Arts Association) to bring you an insider's view into the art and science of marketing your business. We'll start with not-so-obvious fundamentals and focus on the critical aspect for any business' long term survival:

  • What is marketing anyway?
  • What is the ONLY role of marketing?
  • What changed, what you should know and why your future depends on it
  • What business are you in? The answer will surprise you
  • What is differentiation? Get a "difference worksheet" and learn how to uncover your hidden potential

Our presenter will be Zev Asch.  Zev has 30+ years of business experience in Marketing, Sales Management and Business Development. His background covers the high tech, medical device and service industries. As a marketing professional, Zev has worked closely with print providers throughout his career.

The one-hour program costs $35 per location and will run from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Register here.

Data Security Webinar

Are you being asked about SSAE 16, SOC 2, and HIPAA Compliance? What are they? How do they relate? Is your company compliant, and what does it take to get there and where do you start?

Join us for this free webinar on June 4, 2015 as Todd Stephenson from KirkpatrickPrice discusses these multiple frameworks and helps you understand how they might benefit your organization to help meet your regulatory and client requirements, and even your strategic marketing plans.

For more information, or to register, contact B.J. Irvin at (800) 788-2040 or [email protected].

"Who Are Those Guys"

It's a great line from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid as the two charming criminals (played by Paul Newman and Robert Redford) are trying to escape from a very dedicated set of lawmen.  It also may be the question folks will ask this summer about the Paper & Packaging Board (P+PB).

If you are not familiar with this group, don't worry. They're the organization which will administer the "Paper Check-off" revenue from the assessment levied on a variety of paper, including: printing, writing and related paper; kraft packaging paper; containerboard; and paperboard.  This will be the first year we begin to see advertising targeting consumers ala the "Beef. It's What's for Dinner" campaign. Although the $30+ million raised by the "check-off" seems like a lot of money, it's paltry in comparison to the $200 million raised by the Beef Council.

Per Mary Anne Hansan, the organization's executive director, over the past year P+PB has conducted market research to help the organization target the message.  Starting this summer, we'll begin to see the fruition of years of planning, to shine a positive light on the paper and print industry.

Changes To Credit Card Processing.

From our Partner CardConnect.  As of October 2015, all US merchants processing credit card transactions will need to use a terminal/card reader device that can read the chip cards, or the liability for fraudulent transactions will switch from the bank to the merchant.  At this time, transactions that are not swiped are not affected by this change in EMV standards.

Why this change? The United States is the epicenter for cybercrime. Out of last year's total global credit card fraud losses, 47% of them occurred in the US - even though only a quarter of all credit card transactions happen here.  In fact, 43% of US businesses were exposed to credit fraud last year alone.

Why switch to EMV?

  • Lower risk for fraud, thereby decreasing fraud costs
  • Improve dispute resolution
  • Reduce the PCI annual validation requirement for qualified merchants
