You're probably already in long weekend mode...and for good reason! But before you completely check out, I wanted to deliver a super important, short and sweet message. It's highly likely you'll be hosting or part of a bbq, picnic or some kind of gathering and with the outdoor eating nature of the holiday, making sure you're food is safe is soooo important. Not trying to be a wet blanket, but hey, I care about your health! Just a few things to remember:
1) Chill Out: If you've got perishables like meats, dairy and produce, keep them chilled at all times. If they're out at room temp, limit that time to max. 1 hour. Otherwise, you're cultivating a petri dish of bacteria that can really put a damper on the weekend.
2) Grill Safety: Clean the grill with a non-toxic cleaner and wire brush before you fire it up to avoid chemical fumes and flare ups. Also, avoid the 'char' that can produce carcinogens. A branch of fresh rosemary placed onto meats and fish can help prevent those from forming.
3)
Clean Greens: Yeah, you knew this one was coming...wash that produce going into all those awesome salads and meals, pretty please. Less than 1% is inspected by the FDA for safety, and you know by now, water alone won't cut through wax, pesticides or bacteria. Leafy greens are the #1 cause of food borne illness.
Enjoy a happy, healthy, safe holiday with the ones you love as we remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. We honor all who have served and continue to serve!
