A Message from Mayor Nina Jonas

Wednesday was a proud day for the U.S., particularly for the Wood River Valley.  Our community is abuzz over Kaitlyn Farrington's gold medal win in Sochi.  Kaitlyn's stylish and seamless half-pipe run to gold compliments the tremendous love, support and skills of her family, local coaches like Andy Gilbert, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Sun Valley Company and many more in our valley.

Much like the teamwork and drive required to nurture a great athlete, the same is required to maintain a strong community.  For the past five years, an important contributor to the City of Ketchum's team has been Gary Marks, our city administrator.  Gary resigned from his post last Monday to take a job in Lebanon, Oregon.  Thank you for your tremendous work here and best of times to you and your family.

In the meantime, the City is working to create a seamless transition for this post.  I will appoint an interim city administrator who will assist in budgetary and operational needs while we interview candidates for the permanent role.  As we begin the process of replacing our city administrator, I am calling on the community to help us find temporary housing for both the interim city administrator and the incumbent hire.  If you know of availability, please email Special Projects Manager Lisa Enourato.

As always, it is an honor to serve you and I welcome your input in person or via email.

- Mayor Nina Jonas
Farewell to City Administrator Gary Marks
Join the City in thanking Gary Marks for his successful six years of service as City Administrator.  Marks, who will accept a similar position in the City of Lebanon, Oregon, submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Nina Jonas on Monday, Feb. 3.

In his position as City Administrator, Marks has been responsible for managing City operations and finances, along with contributing his time and artistic talent to multiple City and State boards.  Marks' financial rescue of the City lead to recognition by the Association of Idaho Cities with the "Resilient Cities Award" in 2012.  Marks served as the Executive Director for the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency (KURA), Chairman of the Idaho Independent Intergovernmental Authority Trust (III-A), President of the Redevelopment Association of Idaho (RAI) and has managed cities in Idaho, Oregon and Montana for more than 23 years.  Marks was also appointed to the Citizens Coinage Advisory (CCAC) by the United States Secretary of Treasury and holds the Chairman seat.  The CCAC reviews designs for all U.S. coins and medals.

"It has been an honor to work with the Ketchum City Council and staff over the past five and a half years," Marks said.  "As I close out my time, I know the City will be in great hands with the City Council and Ketchum's outstanding and talented staff."

Thank you for your contributions to Ketchum, Gary!  The City of Lebanon has gained an admirable city administrator and you will be missed.
Kaitlyn Takes Gold in Sochi
Our valley erupted when Kaitlyn Farrington's gold-medal winning score in the Women's Snowboard Halfpipe flashed on the board in Sochi on Wednesday.  Many of us in the Wood River Valley have spent time with Kaitlyn on the hill and watched, some even guided, her journey to Winter Games gold.

Native to Sun Valley, toughness is not a foreign concept to Kaitlyn.  As a student of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation since fifth grade, Kaitlyn spent years training with coach Andy Gilbert and others who contributed to her development. According to local  Casey Vegwert, friend and roommate, the turning point for Kaitlyn's success was her win at the Euro X-Games in 2011 when she was a rookie.  Casey says Kaitlyn credits her growth as an athlete to the support of her community and family and her mentor, Barrett Christy, of Gnu.

Kaitlyn's motto is to have 100% fun and refers to her alone time on the board as soul-shredding.  "Kaitlyn followed her passion, had fun and did it in a way that she wanted to do it.  She just marches to her own beat and does better that way," said Casey.

Shortly after sticking the landing that in turn landed her on the top of the podium, Kaitlyn announced plans to first stop in Sun Valley - where her journey began - upon return to the U.S.  Homecoming plans are in the works!

Wastewater Department and Sustainability
Water comes in and water goes out; but that's not all the Ketchum Utilities Department does.  Their efforts in providing a more sustainable environment are best represented through the reuse project unveiled last summer.  The Department provides reuse water to the Weyyakin subdivision for its irrigation and water features.  To address the Weyyakin community's concerns over reuse water in their ponds and how it might harm the water life, the Utilities Department lead their own experiment and now maintain a 120-gallon aquarium where healthy Rainbow Trout flourish in treated wastewater.

Another effort toward sustainability and cost savings for the City is the wastewater staff's participation in the Wastewater Energy Efficiency Cohort, a two-year series of meetings with Idaho Power on long-term energy savings.  As part of this program, energy monitoring equipment has been installed at the City wastewater treatment plant.  With access to current energy usage, the program will help identify ways to improve future City expenditure and explain best practices for wastewater treatment.

The Ketchum Utilities Department is a self-contained business within the City and is supported only by rates charged for the services it provides, although its budget shares in the overhead for operations of the City.  Through its joint ownership with the Sun Valley Water and Sewer District, capital improvements and operations expenses are shared.  This collective participation results in a 50/50 sharing of capital improvements and proportionate sharing of operation expenses, which includes salaries for the City of Ketchum utilities employees, and typically hovers around 50/50.  The proportionate share is determined based on flow.  That is, the amount of wastewater that flows into the plant.

For more information on the Ketchum Utilities Department, please contact public works director and City Engineer, Robyn Mattison
Visitor and Room Night Estimates
The cities of Ketchum, Hailey and Sun Valley recently compiled data for the total number of annual visitors and room nights sold during 2012-2013.  Visitors, which include anyone whose primary place of residence was outside the Wood River Valley, totaled more than 300,000.  During the same time period, the room nights sold exceeded 226,000.  Below are the results of this data collection.  To review the full results of this study, click here
