SUPERHEROES
3D Scanning Superheroes

It seems like film and television are populated with the above type superheroes that are from different planets far away. Maybe it's because we are fascinated with the discovery of a world unlike our own. We imagine the greater good coming from unknown galaxies.
But what it really comes down to is entertainment. Superheroes are exciting. We've been talking about our very own superhero and here she is above. Our Fantasy Hero - Shizzandra who fights crime in the digital world. She is standing next to our actual everyday hero - DangerMan, the Urban Superhero who represents the positive actions of making good choices in the real world.
As most superheroes are based on humans, we find them intriguing to 3D scan as well as develop into a 3D model (and it's our duty to maintain their identities and privacy).
3D scanning characters that have specific wardrobe and props can be challenging depending on the material used. However, just as a superheroes job is to save the day, so is ours. We can't fly but we can get to any location pretty quickly. Give us a call and let us help bring your character to life in the digital world.

FACIAL PERFORMANCE CAPTURE
Capturing Facial Performance

We're actively working on a TV show, providing facial performance capture. The face is very delicate, and the facial muscles allow for an enormous amount of deformation compared to the rest of the body. The reason we 3D scan characters is to have believable content in the digital world. That is why we like to 3D scan facial expressions for use in blend shapes opposed to just sculpting in the expressions.

For this project we we're using a high-end facial motion capture system that uses reference points on the actors face. However, there are a number of options to choose from to design a rig to complete a project. Deciding on which hardware and software to use will depend on the project you're working on as well as specific complications. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What result are you looking for?
  • Is photo-real mandatory?
  • Does it need to be real-time?
  • Will you use markers on the face?
  • How many blend shapes will you need?
  • How close to the camera does the character need to be?
  • How high does the quality need to be?
  • Lastly, what is the budget?
After putting together the list of what you need, the next step is to do some research and to consider the time and cost of the solution. There is also the option of using a service provider. This will eliminate having to purchase the hardware and software yourself. The goal is to find the solution that meets your needs and the needs of your project. Call us with any questions.

WHY 3D SCANNING?
Capturing the World
and Its Content

We are at a point in film, TV, and video games (digital media) where digital content helps get a project done faster. When using 3D scanned models, you receive exact dimensions of buildings, vehicles, and environments.

Using 3D models has become a standard part of the production process for a number of reasons. Maybe a set is used year after year and has to be built upon . Having a digital copy eliminates the need to rebuild a physical set. Perhaps a director wants to blow up a set but isn't satisfied with the final result. A digital set allows a director to film as many takes as needed.

You could also populate your sets with digital characters in the foreground and background and mix them in with live action people and props. Yes, it is becoming a digital world we are watching and building as opposed to the real world we live in. The work however should reflect the real world to keep our attention on the story that is being told.

Have a project with some of the above challenges and not sure whether to go digital or shoot the real item? Call us for a proposal or ask us your questions. We're here to help.
