NEFLIN Tech Conference Recap

Tech ConfFor those who couldn't join us for the NEFLIN Technology Conference (and you know who you are) we had a great day of fun and learning. The event was so popular that we had to increase capacity to accommodate 125 library staff.

Keynote speaker, Lee Rainie, was fantastic. If you get an opportunity to hear him speak...do so (or at least check out his latest book from the NEFLIN Lending Library).

Here is a link to all the presentations that were given, and some photos of the event (Thanks, Jae!).

Thanks also go out to the Florida Division of Library and Information Services for funding this conference. We look forward to bringing this event to you again in 2015!

NEFLIN Annual Meeting Preview

The NEFLIN Annual Meeting will be Thursday, September 12 at the elegant University Club (pictured) in downtown Jacksonville. This year's event will be extra special as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary.
Our Keynote spUniversity Clubeaker is Richard Harwood of the Harwood Institute. Richard is working with ALA on a national initiative called "The Promise of Libraries Transforming Communities".

We'll again hold a Silent Auction and Raffle to benefit the Jim Morris Continuing Education Fund (JMCEF). Details about the JMCEF, which members will apply to for financial assistance to attend library related training events, will be announced at the meeting.

Mark your calendar for September 12 and watch for more information coming soon.

Summer Fun

Let NEFLIN help your library have some summer fun! Borrow our gaming equipment (Kinect, Wii, Xbox, or Guitar Hero) to host an afternoon of gaming to get kids out of the heat. They will love our new Xbox Kinect title "Wipeout 3" based on the long running TV show Wipeout. We can also provide projectors and projector screens to run multiple games at the same time.
Another way to summer fun beat the heat is to borrow the NEFLIN Canopy This large tent seats 75 people in the shade. It is great for any event that you would like to hold outdoors this summer.

Art Institute

The Art Institute of Jacksonville is located in the beautiful Deerwood Park Business Center. The college opened in 2007 and offers programs such a graphic design, animation, filmmaking, fashion, interior design and culinary. The library itself overlooks a lake and oftentimes geese can be spotted walking outside. Inside the library, there are about 8,000 circulating print books and 2,000 DVDs. There are also a lot of unique items that circulate such as movie scripts, stock footage DVDs and sound effects CDs that film students utilize for their movie productions.

The library has 12 Mac computers that have a dual boot function - students can use either the Mac or Windows operating system. Top of the line programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, AutoCad, Revit, Photoshop, FinalCutPro and many more are loaded on the computers so that students can continue working on their class projects. The library also hosts many events as well such as movie nights and workshops on origami, book folding and other art related projects. Who Knew? Libraries Are Still (More!) Relevant in the Digital Age!
Wednesday,
August 7,
9:30 am - 3:30 pm
NEFLIN in Orange Park

Register here.

More than ever, libraries are still relevant in the digital age. You know this, but sadly our funders don't always seem to realize this and it's costing libraries precious operating dollars every single year.

The central theme of this workshop will be focused on engaging your community and supporters in a politically powerful marketing campaign that will show even the most strident anti-tax zealot that investment in libraries will get them the best return on investment that money can buy.

In addition, think about the most challenging issues you are facing with your library - we'll discuss these and get expert advice from all those present. You won't leave disappointed!

Friends, Board members and Trustees are invited to register to attend with you.
