ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S CORNER - Malik B. El-Amin
|
If you've been wondering what's been happening with Griot Theatre over the last several months, the answer is that Sabah and I have been working on our most exciting production to date. I'm not referring to a play, but rather, the birth of our first child, Masai Ali. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 19 inches long. Masai is thriving and bringing us a tremendous amount of joy.

The pregnancy and newborn care necessitated scaled back public activity for Griot Theatre in recent months, however, fruitful work has been going on behind the scenes, to move our mission forward. You'll read about some of those results in this edition of The Storyteller, while other announcements will be shared in the next few months, as we finalize what we think will be exciting news for Griot Theatre and our audiences.
Our focus in 2014 will have three main objectives:
- Actualizing the "new play" element of our mission statement by soliciting, exploring, selecting, and finally producing a new play written by a woman, person of color, or person with a physical disability
- Strengthening our fiscal position by expanding and building upon our relationships with individual and institutional supporters
- Improving our organizational infrastructure with a focus on board development and operational excellence
While 2013 has been good to my immediate family as well as our larger Griot Theatre family, we anticipate this next year will provide even more artistic opportunities for our audiences. Here's to happy holidays with your families ... and we'll see you next year.

In accordance with these aims, we are excited to announce the inaugural Griot Theatre New Play Festival, to take place in March of 2014. Griot Theatre will present a weekend of theatrical readings featuring new contemporary works by women, playwrights of color, and playwrights of diverse physical abilities. Stay tuned for more information about this groundbreaking play festival in January's newsletter!

MEET OUR NEWEST HELPER ELF

REGAN LINTON, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR
As Griot continues to expand its programming, we're also adding staff and volunteers.
Meet our newest addition, Regan Linton. First and foremost an actor, Regan hails from Denver, Colorado, and is a recent graduate of the three-year MFA Acting Program at UC San Diego. She also has a background in social work and theatre administration, having performed and worked with Phamaly Theatre Company in Denver (which produces professional plays and musicals with actors who embody a variety of disabilities). Regan is also a singer, writer, teacher, athlete, and traveler. Since moving to LA in June, she has been seen around town volunteering with the Young Storytellers Foundation, storytelling at iOWest, typing away at various coffee shops, and exploring LA cuisine. Regan uses a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury she sustained in a car accident while attending USC as an undergrad. She is passionate about incorporating people with diverse identities and nontraditional physicalities into theatre. In addition to assisting Griot Theatre behind the scenes with upcoming programming, she looks forward to getting onstage with the company in the upcoming season. Welcome, Regan!
