Help Us Reach Our Goal!

We are raising funds to provide each of our GEARS program graduates a copy of James Cool by Toriano Porter at our celebration for them in December. Toriano Porter will be the keynote speaker at this special event.

Our goal is to raise funds to purchase up to 200 books for students. We're hosting a fundraising event on Monday, October 14 at The Phoenix, featuring a performance by singer Millie Nottingham (Edwards), and other festivities.

YOU can help. It's easy. $10 will provide 1 student with a copy of this book as a gift at their graduation celebration. But any amount helps! Our goal is to purchase books for 200 students.

Our GEARS students at MCC-Penn Valley want to change their lives forever through literacy. YOU can help make their graduation an unforgettable milestone on this journey.

On Monday, October 14, a benefit will be held at The Phoenix to benefit recent graduates of Literacy Kansas City's GEARS program at MCC-Penn Valley. It will feature fun door prizes, raffles, food, fun, and a special performance by singer Millie Nottingham (Edwards).

All funds raised will be used to purchase copies of the book James Cool by St. Louis-based author Toriano Porter. The books will be presented to graduating GEARS students at a celebration event in December, where Porter will be the keynote speaker.

The GEARS (Guided Educational Access to Reading Skills) Program provides MCC-Penn Valley students with the opportunity to receive free basic literacy courses and one-on-one work with a literacy tutor prior to enrolling in college-level classes.

$10 will provide a book for one student. We hope to raise funds for 200 books, and will provide one to each student being recognized in December. These books symbolize the new opportunities that they have created for themselves through their hard work and dedication to the GEARS program.

We hope you can join us on October 14 for this fantastic event! Even if you can't attend, you have the opportunity to support this campaign through the end of November by making a donation to Literacy Kansas City. Online donations can be made by clicking the button below. Please designate all gifts to "GEARS Graduation!" Any amount you can give is appreciated and will be combined with other donations to purchase books.

Thank you for your support of Literacy Kansas City and most importantly, our students.
