HKA celebrates past success, promising future
Taken from Jewish Herald Voice
Houston Kashruth Association held its Annual Meeting on Sunday, Aug. 25, in the library of United Orthodox Synagogues. Ron Moses, M.D., presided; Rabbi Yehoshua Wender opened with a dvar Torah. Dr. Moses said that HKA has many new clients and the organization has transformed in the last year. He acknowledged the contributions that board members, rabbis, mashgichim and HKA staff make to the success of the organization. "HKA is poised for unique relationships ... to be recognized nationally," he said. "We are slowly transforming the community's perception of keeping kosher - it's easier and easier - and the value of keeping kosher ... especially at simchas." Moses added that keeping kosher is more accessible now, than ever before. Continue Reading

Kosher Peace Dividend Put on Hold in Middle East
Taken from koshertoday.com
JERUSALEM - Rabbinic sources have long whispered that they frequently provide kosher certification in Egypt and Jordan, the two Arab countries that have signed a peace treaty in Israel. The sources say that for security reasons they never speak about these kosher certifications openly but they acknowledge that recent unrest in Egypt, for example, has for the time being resulted in a suspension of these kosher certifications.
Several Egyptian factories that marketed reliably kosher food to Israel will be affected. "At a time when we cannot guarantee our workers' safety one hundred percent, the policy is not to put them in danger," said a statement from Rabbi David Moskowitz, the Admor of the Shatz Hassidic movement in Ashdod and head of the SKS-Lemehadrin kosher label. As soon as the violence in Egypt subsides, the question of sending workers to supervise kosher food production will be reconsidered, he added. At some international food shows, at least one olive oil manufacturer from Jordan sported kosher certification from an Israeli rabbi.
Not your bubbe's kosher meals

Call it a different approach. Michael M. Medina wanted to start his own food business. Yet instead of taking the culinary collegiate route, the Northern Virginia resident knew he had to bring a strong business sense literally to the table.
First would come the business and marketing degree from George Mason University, next would come the food. But really Medina had grown up in a Montreal home of Moroccan-Jewish parents. The 33-year-old grew up speaking Spanish at home and French at school. Along with the language came tasty delicacies and meals that directly reflected his upbringing.
In June, The Kosher Kitchen Catering Company, owned by Medina, was selected by Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah in Potomac to become the shul's in-house caterer.
The Kosher Kitchen Catering Company is certified kosher by Capitol-K under the Rabbinical Council (Vaad Harabanim) of Greater Washington. Medina is also the owner of DISTRIKT Bistro, the kosher Mediterranean restaurant at the Washington D.C. Jewish Community Center.
"Food," he said during a recent interview at Beth Sholom, "is something that really communicates between people of diverse backgrounds." Continue Reading
