Westland Celebrates Groundbreaking of New City Hall

Who: City of Westland

What: New City Hall Groundbreaking Ceremony

Where: 36300 Warren Road, Westland, MI

When: Monday, October 7, 2013 at 11:00am

Why: Groundbreaking of the brand new City Hall

We
stland, MI -City dignitaries, department heads and members of the Westland City Council are inviting residents, the press and business leaders to join them in a Groundbreaking Ceremony to inaugurate the transformation of Westland's new City Hall building. With shovels and sledgehammers in hand, they will gather at the former City Circuit building on Warren Road on Monday, October 7 at 11am to kick off a momentous occasion in the City's history.

Upon completion, City offices will move from the Ford Road City Hall, built in 1966, to the newly retrofitted 64,000 square foot facility.  Ideally located in the heart of Westland's "Shop and Dine" district, this $10 million purchase and retrofit of a long-vacant building is being funded with tax revenues generated by the City's Tax Increment Finance Authority.

"We are celebrating much more than renovation of a vacant building;" said Mayor Wild.  "We are hailing a resurgence in economic and community development that is sure to follow the City's reinvestment in our Shop and Dine District and we are charting a positive course for Westland's future;" Wild continued.

The result will be a more functional City Hall nearly five times the size of the current city hall with significant space for community meeting rooms and storage space.  Joining the current City Hall departments will be the Department of Public Service Administration, the Building and Planning Departments, the Youth Assistance Program and WLND, the City's Cable Department. Replacing the current City Hall long afflicted with basement flooding causing erosion of the land underneath the building, an ever growing sinkhole that compromises the structure's foundation, and a building lacking meeting space and ADA accessibility, the Warren Road City Hall will be a welcoming, accessible, functional modern and energy-efficient public facility that will well serve the residents and businesses of Westland for years to come.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony beginning at 11:00am on the new City Hall property will include short presentations, followed by tours of the site. Boxed lunches will be provided.

"We welcome everyone to come out and join us for this historic celebration;" concluded Mayor Wild.
