SUMMER
IS EVEN BETTER UP HERE
YOUR GETAWAY TO THE RUSSIAN FAR EAST IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
|
IMAGINE - Russia's most exotic region with endless opportunities to explore dramatic landscapes, see unique wildlife, and experience native cultures and hospitality. If this sounds like your idea of the perfect summer getaway, consider spending your vacation in the Russian Far East.
WHY? This is your chance to visit one of the world's last frontiers, a place few non-Russians have ever seen. Kamchatka is much like Alaska was 50 or 100 years ago - vast, pristine, unexplored. Check other REASONS for visiting the Russian Far East now. CITIES: Many of the Russian Far East's cities are located along the Pacific coast, such as Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vladivostok, Magadan and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Board the Trans-Siberian Railroad at Vladivostok and visit Khabarovsk and Irkutsk on your way to Moscow. Inland, Yakutsk is the world's largest city build on permafrost and renowned for its diamond industry, Ysyakh festival and mammoth museum. Many of these cities are hundreds of years old and feature an eclectic mix of tsarist-era buildings and modern ones.

DISCOVER MAGADAN: TRAGIC HISTORY & BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES
|
| Photo of Magadan by Pavel Zhdanov |
Surrounded by mountains, Magadan is so remote that no train lines or roads reach it: you can only get there by sea or plane. Thanks to Yakutia Airlines, passengers can now travel from Anchorage to Magadan (GDX) via Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (PKC), thus reducing the total travel time to under 9 hours. The PKC-GDX service is operated with one of the airline's new Bombardier Q-400 aircraft. Magadan was established primarily as as support base for the Kolyma gold fields to the North, but it is infamous for the the labor camps established there by the Soviet government. Tourists now come to Magadan to visit the remain of the camps, including the Dalstroy Gulag Camp, and the Gulag Memorial by renowned artist Ernst Neizvestny. Magadan is also well-known for its beautiful natural scenery and recreational opportunities such as hiking, rafting, and wildlife viewing. The waters along the coast of the city and the inland rivers are known to be the perfect fishing grounds for salmon, pike, trout, nelma and perch. Magadan is a destination filled with fascinating sites and a tragic history. With business opportunities and beautiful landscapes, this is a city with many hidden treasures and places to discover.
