THE HEART OF THE SPIRIT

"I believe that Spirit is one and is everywhere present. That it never leaves me. That in my ignorance I may withdraw from it, but I can realize its presence the instant I return to my senses.  It is this belief in a power larger than myself and other than myself which allows me to venture into the unknown and even the unknowable. I cannot separate what I conceive as Spirit from my concept of God. Thus, I believe that God is Spirit."

                                ~ Maya Angelou from

Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now

To live with a constant awareness of the Holy Spirit is to live with love and hope.  With the Spirit, we move forward, knowing we are never alone. To live with the Spirit is to live the blessing of the Community of Heaven, a commonwealth where the heart of God intersects with the heart of people. At the center of the intersection is relationships.

Jesus' message to those gathered on the mountainside, commonly called the Sermon on the Mount, was an invitation to a new way of life.  The congregation that heard this message for the first time was primarily comprised of the powerless.  They were a people under the oppressive rule of Rome.  Jesus called them to rethink the meaning of power, claim their blessedness, and live with a higher integrity.  It was a call that came with a challenge to trust God, rather than the self-absorbed religious authorities who sought to use God for their own purposes.

In our scripture this Sunday from Matthew 5: 21-26, Jesus applies this higher integrity to relationships.  In some of his strongest words Jesus describes anger as a destructive force.  Left unattended, the heart implodes.  Yet if driven by impulse, the heart explodes.   To the risks and opportunities of anger Jesus says "be reconciled with your sibling. . .come to terms quickly with your accuser " (Mt. 5:24,25).  Reconciliation is a difficult calling.  The spirit of our times is just to move on.  Yet the teachings of Jesus invite us to take the risk to "venture into the  unknown and even the unknowable" dynamics of love and forgiveness, trusting that the heart of the Spirit will be at the heart of such risk.

See you Sunday at 9am and 11am.

Faithfully,

Rev J. Dwayne Johnson

LITURGICAL DANCE MINISTRY TO SPONSOR A SIX-WEEK DANCE WORKSHOP

"Have you ever felt the Spirit calling you to worship through

movement, through dance? Liturgical dance is a powerful, passionate
and transformative form of worship but often we allow things like
technique or body image to hold us back.

Josie Hoover, a Doctoral candidate at Wesley Theological Seminary, will be joining us for six weeks to demonstrate how powerful the ministry of liturgical dance can be in the life of worship. The start date is Thursday, March 13 at 6:30pm. We'll meet downstairs in the Music room.

The prayer is to show/teach/remind dancers how liturgical dance is

a worshiping arts ministry, how it is a calling and how to nurture
their calling in dance (physically, spiritually, mentally).

No previous dance experience is necessary and we hope that you will
take this opportunity to worship with us and perhaps awaken new
spiritual gifts within yourself. This opportunity is open to the
ENTIRE congregation.
