NEWS AND RESOURCES
Helping Students Achieve
Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH, and Columbus City Schools have joined hands to ensure that students meet the reading requirements necessary to progress from third to fourth grade this spring. As The Columbus Dispatch reports, "Under the state's new third-grade reading guarantee, thousands of Ohio students who don't pass the test could be held back for the first time this summer." To meet this challenge, the library has launched Reading Buddies, a program which pairs students with staff, Library VolunTeens and vetted community volunteers for 1:1 reading practice. The program consists of 15-minute after-school sessions that focus on vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

Teen Tech Week: Are You Ready?
Libraries are revving up for March 9-15 to celebrate youth who come to the library to dream, experiment and create with their peers. Follow the celebration on Twitter #TTW14 and look to Pinterest for project ideas.
2014 INNOVATIONS
Cincinnati Recognized for Sustainability

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH, has received a 2013 Power Partner Award from Duke Energy for its environmental upgrades, including new lighting and controls, alternate summer re-heat, major mechanical retrofits, building automation and control system enhancements. Duke Energy has more than 4,000 large business customers throughout the Carolinas, Midwest and Florida that are eligible for this annual award. The library's conservation efforts are expected to save $430,000 per year and reduce energy usage by 37%. See the numbers for yourself.

What Will You Showcase?

ULC's fifth annual Innovations Initiative opens shortly and we hope you're thinking about the new ways of working that you'll be showcasing.  Watch for the guidelines, gather your team and start thinking about the big ideas that keep your library vital.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
New Central Library for DC

Following years of debate, an architectural team has been chosen to renovate the famed Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC. The original building, opened in 1972 and designed by Mies van der Rohe, has long been in need of transformation to accommodate the new ways that people use libraries today. According to The Washington Post, the new design "...stresses openness and environmental sustainability. It (will) enliven the library's main floor by removing many of the brick walls that Mies used to heighten the geometric contrast between transparency and solidity. Large, glass staircases (will) connect the main floor to spaces above, opening up the box-like atrium, which often feels more like a waiting room or empty lounge, disconnected from the reading and research spaces on higher floors."
