Blessing of the Animals

We will have our annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 6, at 4:00 pm in the yard that faces Virginia Street.  This celebration is in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, thirteenth century founder of the Order of Saint Francis--our present day Franciscans. Francis is often referred to as the Patron Saint of Animals because of his great love of all creation--and especially of God's animal creatures.  At the service we will have a special liturgy in thanksgiving for the many ways in which our animal friends enrich our lives, and each animal present will receive a special prayer of blessing. All are welcome! (All animals must be on leash or properly contained.)

Annual "Festival Celebration of God's Gifts"

Please join us on Thursday, October 16, at 6:00 pm for our second annual "Festival Celebration of God's Gifts" in All Saints Hall. The evening will begin with social time and musical entertainment, followed by a chili supper provided by our ECW and a presentation by the Rev. Canon Jason Lewis, the new Canon for Congregational Vitality for the Diocese of Kentucky. Vestry members are currently selling raffle tickets for an Apple iPad2, and there will be a drawing for the winner that evening.

Cash Flow

Every year at this time, the church faces difficulties with cash flow.  We know that all will be well by the end of the year, but, it would be helpful if some of you who usually wait until December 31 to pay your pledges might do it a little earlier.  Thanks!

Men of Grace

Just a reminder that the Men of Grace meet on the first and third Saturdays of every month at 8:00 am.  This is a great time of fellowship and occasionally doing some projects around the church.  The next meeting is October 5--in the kitchen in All Saints!

Youth Group

In addition to preparing for confirmation when the Bishop comes to visit with us on October 13, our Youth Group members are all hoping to attend the Diocesan Fall "Gathering" at All Saints Conference Center in Leitchfield, which will be held Friday, October 18 through Sunday, October 20.  The theme of the retreat is JOY--Jesus, Others, and You!

Tragedy in Pakistan

Our hearts and prayers are with the people of the Anglican Church in Pakistan.  Historic All Saints Church in Peshawar was the target of two suicide bombers this past Sunday.  Eighty-five people were reportedly killed and more than one hundred injured.  According to the Guardian news service, "Christians are a tiny and politically weak minority in Muslim-majority Pakistan who suffer from prejudice and sporadic bouts of mob violence.  But Sunday was the first time that bombs had been used to such deadly effect on worshippers."  Anglicans from around the world have expressed their sadness and solidarity with the church in Pakistan.  In his letter of support, The Archbishop of Canterbury wrote, "I am appalled to learn of the attack on All Saints Church in Peshawar as people had gathered there to pray.  My heart goes out to all those bereaved and injured by this terrible attack.  I pray for the peace of Pakistan and the protection of Christ's people.  With the people of Peshawar I join in calling for the Pakistan Government and all people of good will to ensure that communities may go about their daily lives in safety, and that the perpetrators are brought to justice."

Outreach Update

We try to stay aware of and responsive to the needs of the community and especially our closest neighbors--the Salvation Army.  Sometime back, we contributed to the purchase of a new refrigerator there.  As it turns out, someone donated the refrigerator, but, at about the same time, SA became aware that they were going to have to replace a van later this year.  With our permission, our earlier donation was transferred into the fund for the van.  On another note, the SA is looking for volunteers to serve as bell-ringers during the upcoming holiday season.  If any of you are interested in considering giving some time to this valuable ministry, the Rector can give you more information.

Kroger Gift Cards

Please join with us in supporting our Kindergarten and Pre-School by purchasing a Kroger Gift Card from the church for $5, loading it up with additional money at Kroger, and using it for all your Kroger purchases.  I (Alice) read in Sunday's Nashville Tennessean that there are schools in Nashville that have earned around $10,000 per year through this Kroger program.  We can do it, too!  We have already earned $1200!  Contact Tom Schmidt for cards.
