Libraries and e-Rate
Politico, the online news magazine of all-things political, covers the rising tide of awareness that public libraries need to be more prominently engaged in the FCC's Internet subsidy program, known as "e-Rate." Reed Hundt, former FCC chairman, is providing advice to ULC as it prepares recommendations for expanding the program to strengthen the crucial technology access that libraries provide to our communities. New Online Learning from IMLS

The Hour of Code is Here
December 9-15 is Computer Science Education Week, which has as its centerpiece, the "Hour of Code" campaign to demystify computer science for youth everywhere by taking them through introductory tutorials that can be completed online, on a smartphone, or even unplugged. Learn more and join the movement.
Health Care in the Library
The December issue of Governing magazine profiles two library-based health initiatives that illustrate the power of libraries working in partnership with other community agencies. HPL's Exhibit Snapshot
Houston Public Library's, TX, Exhibit Snapshot is an open, searchable and expanding resource that enables global access to exhibitions of the library's extensive collections. As users experience and navigate through the virtual gallery, the intuitive interface facilitates examination of works with contextually appropriate functionality including close-ups, metadata. Exhibit Snapshot serves as a venue for outreach and education and offers a wide and diverse audience access to a vast, primarily non-circulating, broadly respected special collection. Newport News Public Library System's (NNPLS), VA, Pearl Bailey Library Youth Program was 1 of 12 after-school programs honored by First Lady Michelle Obama at a White House ceremony that conferred the 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards.  Pearl Bailey Library's Youth Program is designed to expand knowledge of literature and engage youth as stakeholders in their library. Teens and youth who frequent the library serve on advisory committees that work with staff to plan and implement the programs, which include literary clubs, arts programs and homework help. Congratulations to Youth Program Director Demetria Tucker who received the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement earlier this year.
