MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIRS:
Hello friends,

We are wrapping up our first full year as the Emerging Tocqueville Leaders (ETL) with 26 members and a successful set of events including volunteering at Mercy House, collecting backpacks and school supplies for Spurgeon Middle School's Destination Graduation class, ETL Talks events with General and Bill Lyon and Stephen Gordon. I've also enjoyed our social events and getting to know many of our members on a personal level and understanding what drives them to be part of the change we want to make in Orange County.

With all of this success we look forward to the 2013/2014 year and how the ETL group can help to implement OCUW's strategic goals that were laid out at the recent launch event. The strategic plan addresses the four main areas of largest need in Orange County, including Education, Income, Health and Housing, by aiming to achieve these four goals over the next 10 years:

  • Cut the high school dropout rate by 50%
  • Reduce the number of financially unstable families in Orange County by 25%
  • Increase the number of healthy youth in Orange County by 1/3
  • Lower the homeless and housing insecure population of children by 50%

ETL is excited to engage our members in a meaningful way to help execute on this strategic plan! As we look at ways our group can contribute to these important goals, I'd like to challenge you to make this upcoming year even better than our first year by reaching that milestone of 50 members so that ETL can be even more impactful!

I look forward to seeing you at the next ETL Talks event on November 19, 2013 with Mike Hayde and Laura Khouri of Western National Group, and at many other events over the upcoming year.

~Nicole

ETL TALKS
ETL TALKS
with Stephen Gordon
by Duleep Rodrigo, KPMG

Our second ETL Talks event was led by Stephen Gordon, Chairman, CEO & President of Opus Bank.  It was inspirational to hear from a leader that started a bank during the economic downturn and made it to one of the fastest growing banks in the region with 54 locations and counting. He had a vision to create liquidity in the marketplace, not only for retail and commercial purposes, but also for the nonprofit sector.  He achieved this by creating the Opus Bank Foundation.

Stephen discussed the early stages in his career in New York and the pivotal moments that led to his success later in life. He was honest and candid in sharing his remarks on what worked and what didn't as he grew his career. All throughout his discussion it was clear that Stephen was a leader with extraordinary vision, focus, and discipline in execution.

He also spent time discussing the importance of philanthropy and how challenging it can be to give when many non-profit organizations are finding it hard to raise funds. He encouraged the audience to meaningfully engage in philanthropy and not for the purposes of advancing one's career or making a sale.   Overall, this was another very successful ETL Talks event that provided insight into an OC leader who is helping shape the community we live in through his vision and passion for helping those in need.
