2015 Excellence Awards: And the Finalists Are...
Each year, MNN honors the passion and impact of organizations and leaders in the local nonprofit sector through the Nonprofit Excellence Awards.
This year, we received almost 200 nominations and our committee of judges pored over each inspiring story and amazing statistic. We learned about an innovative jacket that comforts cancer patients and a local collaboration that connects young girls in public housing developments to mentors. We were wowed by the amazing leaders who have shaped the sector with their decades of experience, and a couple of 27 year olds who are making their own waves. We were touched by the tireless advocacy that reframed the conversation on college sexual assault. And we were impressed with the small nonprofits using brain over brawn to prove you don't need to be big to make a big change.

Executive Order Looks at State Regulations
An executive order from Governor Baker (Executive Order 562, "To Reduce Unnecessary Regulatory Burden") is requiring a review of almost all state regulations, and mandating that none should exceed federal requirements. As reported in the Boston Globe, federal regulations don't tend to be as tough as the ones here in the Commonwealth, and this may impact nonprofits, especially environmental organizations.
House Panel Weighs in on MA Budget
Last month, Gov. Charlie Baker filed his $38 billion state budget proposal, calling for a 3% overall increase in spending. The plan would close a $1.8 billion gap between projected revenues and spending in the fiscal year that begins July 1. The House Ways and Means Committee is expected to make its recommendations to the full House on Wednesday. You can read the full story on Telegram.com.
