The E-Rate program
was launched in 1997 by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to provide libraries and schools with discounts on telephone and internet costs. Today, we live in the broadband era in which high-speed data plus wi-fi is the "new normal." Accordingly, the FCC is seeking input on how to update the E-Rate program to serve the needs of local communities. A team of leading telecommunications lawyers is working with ULC to develop recommendations for changing the federal E-Rate program so that more libraries can create value for their patrons. SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION
Integrating STEM into Library Technology Classes and Youth Programs Orange County Library System (OCLS), FL, is on the bandwagon with a variety of programs for children and youth that help prepare them for future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Next up at OCLS: The Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity.

MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS
Durham County Library, NC, joins the digital media lab movement with a grant from Duke Energy Foundation to fund the launch of a Teen Tech Learning Lab.

Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OH, will present TEDxYouth@ToledoLibrary in celebration of National Gaming Day. Live speakers and TED Talks videos from around the world will be in the mix. Don't forget to tune-in.

Barbara Flynn, County Librarian of Contra Costa County Library, CA, has announced her retirement effective Nov. 13. She plans to remain active in the California Library Association and ALA.
