it came to investing in power development projects. Leah Nelson Guay supported First Nations leadership by creating the concept for the ground-breaking First Nations Power Authority of Saskatchewan (FNPA) in 2011. It's a not-for-profit that facilitates power development projects for First Nations of Saskatchewan with crown utility SaskPower through a 10-year agreement.

Q Where did the idea for creating the FNPA come from?

A It was driven out of a need in the marketplace. A lot of First Nations are interested in becoming involved in the power development sector. Projects cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and it can be very risky. In Saskatchewan there were so many communities investing money and hitting a wall with their project. They were developing projects that didn't align with SaskPower's needs. There was an understanding that Saskatchewan had a need for more power generation. A lot of people where coming in from outside of Saskatchewan, without a sense of what the development pathways were for SaskPower. They had a different take based on their legitimate experience outside of Saskatchewan, in other jurisdictions....MORE

Opower gives customers a heads up on rising costs: Software notifies utility customers in advance if their bill is tracking high which gives them the opportunity to adjust their energy use.

POLICY IN BRIEF
Canada
Ontario developing a climate change policy: The province has issued a discussion paper inviting public feedback and has instigated public consultations that will wrap up by March 24. CEEA will be making a submission.

Edmonton wants EE incentives for buildings: The city is proposing an energy plan with $2.5 billion in savings that will help cut GHG emissions and includes energy efficiency incentives for homes and buildings.

International
US continues to push for energy efficiency and clean tech: The US DOE reports that federal energy use in post offices, court houses and military bases has dropped to the lowest level on record due to reduced square footage and energy intensity. And it continues to invest in that strategy as Obama's 2016 budget proposes US$7.4 billion for clean technologies and US$4 billion for states to make deeper cuts to power plant emissions. Consumers are also part of the solution with the creation of the Green Button Alliance Initiative which will connect them with tools and information to help them save energy and money.

UK law makes landlords upgrade buildings or lose out on rentals:  As of 2018 landlords must get their leakiest properties to an energy efficiency rating "E". Some think this could be the most significant piece of legislation in a generation for green building.

Canada
BC Hydro New Construction Program has funds for energy modeling: New seniors' residences in West Vancouver are the perfect example of how the program helped get energy savings.

US
New York launches US$20m competition for advanced energy projects: Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers will compete to cut their energy costs by as much as US$400 million annually.

Citigroup sets US$100 billion funding goal for green projects:  Looking specifically for projects that fight climate change, renewable power, energy efficiency and sustainable transportation are all part of the mix.

Venture capitalists are into energy efficiency: Energy efficiency companies raised over US$1 billion in 2014, most from venture capital, according to a Mercom Capital report. And North America was strong on venture funding according to Lux Research which reports energy-efficient building technologies rose to US$944 million in 2014. If you want to learn more about what energy efficiency projects venture capitalists like CB Insights has ranked the 2014 energy efficiency deals.

International
EE does not have a finance problem: Availability of finance isn't a problem in energy efficiency and smart cities -- it's the lack of well-developed bankable projects.

$10-million, 5-year retrofit at Kingston General Hospital: The huge undertaking is expected to save $760,000 a year in operating costs.

McDonald's is thinking net zero energy restaurants: The Rocky Mountain Institute is helping the iconic chain with the feasibility of developing net zero restaurants globally but is  studying three US locations.

Facebook, Arby's pledge to Better Building Challenge: They join 20 new companies committed to slashing energy use by 20 per cent as part of the DOE's challenge. Over 250 organizations and 9,000 buildings are participating.

London's greenest building is world class: The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is ranked second in the world for its energy efficient design.
