TC Hounds Become Members of the USPHL

As the TC Hounds wrap up another successful season, winning the Veteran's Cup for the third straight year and being named Organization of the Year by the Midwest Junior Hockey League, they also wrap up their involvement with the MWJHL, which, along with the Minnesota Junior Hockey League, is joining the US Premier Hockey League. With this change, the MWJHL and MJHL will cease to exist.

According to Hounds Head Coach Jacek Wilk, being a part of the USPHL will mean changes for the team, including more travel, easier player recruiting, increased competition among teams and a greater opportunity for players to be seen by more college recruiters due to the number of showcases that will be a part of the schedule.

Congratulations Hounds on your great season! All of us at Centre Ice and your fans look forward to the upcoming changes and exciting adventures with the new league!

Another Successful Guns-N-Hoses Supports Local Family

Nearly 800 people attended the 2nd Annual Guns 'n Hoses hockey game between local law enforcement and firefighters/EMS at Centre Ice Arena on February 7, 2015, raising $10,174.59 for the Kohler Family. The focus of this annual fundraiser is to support a local family in need. Christopher Kohler of Suttons Bay has been undergoing diagnostic testing for multiple inoperable brain masses and the funds raised were given to his family to assist with travel and medical expenses not covered by insurance.

A huge THANK YOU to the incredibly caring Grand Traverse community for supporting the Kohler Family and to our local Firefighters, EMS and Law Enforcement personnel. Centre Ice is honored to be a part of this important event.

TC NHL Prospect Tournament Dates Released; Blackhawks Attending

The Detroit Red Wings will host their annual NHL Prospect Tournament at Centre Ice Arena from Sept. 11-15, 2015. The Chicago Blackhawks have been added to the eight-team tournament this fall, joining the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Red Wings.

This marks the 17th season that Traverse City will host the tournament, boasting nearly 500 players who have skated in at least one NHL game. Twenty-four players who participated in the tournament in September 2014 have made at least one appearance in the NHL this season, while 16 prospects from the Red Wings' last three tournament rosters have played in at least one NHL game, including current roster players Joakim Andersson, Tomas Jurco, Alexey Marchenko, Petr Mrazek, Gustav Nyquist, Teemu Pulkkinen, Riley Sheahan and Brendan Smith. The Columbus Blue Jackets were tournament champions in 2014, winning the title for the third time in their history.

The tournament divides the eight-team field into two four-team divisions. Teams will play each team in their division during the round robin before a crossover on the final day of the tournament, capped off with the first-place finishers in each division meeting for the championship on Tuesday, Sept. 15. A complete tournament schedule and rosters for each team will be released at a later date.

The Lansing Rink Rats Have Settled In at Centre Ice Arena

On March 26-28, 2015, the Lansing Rink Rats returned to Centre Ice Arena for the third time, having decided after their 2013 camp to make Centre Ice their permanent home-away-from-home for their annual camp which includes instructional sessions with four different coaches, games and Saturday playoffs. This group has so much passion for the sport of hockey On Ice wanted to know more...so we asked! Here's what Toby Koenig, one of the club's seven board of directors, had to say:

"The Lansing Rink Rats group is made up of 30, 40, 50 & 60+ year-old guys that love to play the game of hockey. Most of the guys play 2 or 3 times a week in various leagues. For the past 12 years we have held a three day camp. In the past our travels have landed us in Buffalo, London, Kalkaska, Chelsea, Grand Rapids and Traverse City. After the 2013 camp, held at Centre Ice Arena, the choice of returning to Traverse City was very easy and we feel that the Rink Rats have finally found a home.

The staff and facility at Centre Ice are top notch. Everyone makes our entire group feel very welcome, always asking if we need anything or if they can help in any way. This past year I had a chance to speak with Terry Marchand and Todd Spaulding about our desire to return again next year and they were very open to new ideas and ways to accommodate our group. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with Centre Ice Arena for years to come."

Thanks, Toby and all the Rink Rats, for choosing Centre Ice. We truly enjoy having you in the rink year after year!
