IIT-Kanpur opens office in New York

Kanpur: With an aim to hunt for qualified and capable faculty abroad, IIT-Kanpur has set up an office in New York with alumnus Sanjeev Khosla designated as the overseas brand ambassador of the institute.

The office will also try to amass funds through the alumni based there, IIT-Kanpur Director Indranil Manna said.
The office will help in connecting foreign faculty with IIT-K. More than a dozen teachers teaching in foreign institutions have expressed an interest in associating with IIT-K, Mr Manna said.

Also, ex-IITians posted at good positions in various American cities are willing to help IIT-K. They are also collecting funds to do the same, he said. They are also in talks with international level technical educational institutes and universities for research and other issues. A system to invite the students and faculty of foreign institutes to IIT-K is also being formulated, he added. Sanjeev Khosla has been associated with many educational institutions. His tenure is for three years, having commenced on September 1, 2013. He will act as a link between IIT-K, the alumni of the institute who are living abroad and foreign educational institutions, Mr Manna said.

The office on 62, William Street is on lease for five years, he said.

IIT Madras Builds Sustainable houses at Rs 6 lakh

The six- lakh home from IIT Madras

Chennai: Devdas Menon, Professor in Department of Civil Engineering - IIT Madras, explains how they came about building a flat that could create affordable housing for masses.

India has a severe housing shortage problem, which is well known. In particular, there is a need to address the shelter needs of the lower income groups and their aspirations. The challenge is to make these aspirations a reality, by providing for an affordable solution. Ideally, the solution should be scalable - to reach the masses - and should be quickly built, and at the same time addresses issues of sustainability and quality. Clearly, we need a 'game changer' in the housing industry. (In pics: the six- lakh home from IIT Madras)

Hoobastank band mesmerised the crowd at IIT Delhi annual fest

Vocalist: Douglas Robb

The first day of the IIT Delhi annual fest was as grand as was promised, with people trying to enter even after the main performance had ended.

The amphitheatre was jam-packed with students climbing trees and scaling the boundary walls because, like they said here, 'This was an experience you couldn't afford to miss'. The crowd kept chanting for the band Hoobastank during the earlier performances also, but when asked about their favourite Hoobastank song, other than The Reason, everyone was clueless. A quiz that the emcees conducted during set-up also had to be stopped midway because, well, no one had the answers!

IIT-JEE 2013: Govt may modify admission norms

The government may modify the admission norms for IIT-JEE  and propose an alternative criterion of minimum 75% marks in the school-leaving examination.

According to official sources, the human resource development ministry reviewed the system on August 14 in the presence of officials from the IITs and CBSE.

It has now asked the IITs to take up the matter in the Joint Admission Board, the apex admissions body of the IITs.

According to the current eligibility, students should be in the top 20 percentile of their Class 12 boards in order to be admitted to an IIT.

It is tougher for CBSE students to be in the top 20 percentile.

It is compulsory for candidates who have appeared in the 12th board exam in 2012 to have 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD candidates) to secure seats in IITs.

Top 20 percentile rule will be applicable for those reappearing for the 2013 12th board exam (to improve their marks), if they use their 2013 exam results to apply for the JEE.

Students who plan to use their 2012 results will be selected only on basis of the 60% eligibility rule. This will be a one-time exception

For foreign students, the CBSE 20 percentile cut-off will be considered as the eligibility criteria.

IIT-Hyderabad tops in research among new institutes

The Indian Institute of Technology here has taken the lead among the eight new IITs in quality of research.

Equipped with strong research facilities, IIT-H has been rated nine on the h-index along with IIT Ropar, while the other six IITs in Patna, Indore, Mandi, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar and Bhubaneshwar were rated in the band of two and five. This was revealed in a recent journal citation assessment commissioned by the new IITs.

The h-index, named after Argentine-American physicist Jorge E. Hirsch, measures the impact of a scientific research publication of an institution or an individual researcher based on the number of citations per publication.

The assessment revealed that research from IIT-H had been cited 535 times compared to 362 for IIT Ropar. The figures for most other new IITs are in just two digits.
