FEATURED DESTINATION:
DISCOVER IRKUTSK AND LAKE BAIKAL
Irkutsk
Irkutsk's modern architecture blends in with traditional ornamented wooden houses and impressive churches. Photo: Yakutia Airlines.

For many travelers, Irkutsk is transit point for Lake Baikal and a popular stopover on The Trans-Siberian railway, but the city has a lot to offer on its own. It was founded as a merchant town that connected the trade routes between Russia and China, and in the 19th century the city became a site of political exile. Today Irkutsk is a major cultural, industrial and scientific hub and one of Siberia's most popular tourist destinations. What to see in Irkutsk:

Wooden Architecture and Churches - Irkutsk is famous for its wooden buildings adorned with ornate, hand carved decorations. Irkutsk is also home to a remarkable number of historic churches and cathedrals, many of which have been restored to their original beauty, among them Ascension Church, Epiphany Cathedral, Our Lady of Kazan Church, and Saviour Church.

Museums - Visit Irkutsk's three breathtaking museums: explore the City History Museum, which holds artifacts and rarities from Irkutsk's fascinating past; the Irkutsk Regional Museum, which tells the tale of Siberia's many rich cultures; or the Sukachev Art Museum, which houses Siberia's best collection of European, East Asian, and Siberian masterpieces.

Lake Baikal - Among other places to visit while in Irkutsk is Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites. Baikal is rich in biodiversity. It is home to the Baikal seal, or Nerpa, the only seal in the world which lives in fresh water and it's only one of over 2,600 endemic species of plants and animals known at Lake Baikal. It is also home to the delicious Baikal fish known as Omul. It belongs to the salmon family and is commonly caught, smoked and sold in the markets and on the side of the road.

Listvyanka Settlement - a resort village and the closest access point to Lake Baikal. Listvyanka houses numerous museums, shops, cafes, saunas, and more. Not to mention, Lake Baikal is literally at your doorstep! Listvyanka offers variety of tours from boat and horse rides, to trekking, hiking, rafting, or rock climbing.

How to Get There: The Kamchatka-Irkutsk flights on Yakutia Airlines operate June-September on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Consult your travel agent or AirRussia.US for details.

FROM NOBODY'S RIVER PROJECT:

The Power of Struggle: Falling Off The Map In
Far Eastern Russia

Nobody's River

"Why would you come to this place that God forgot?" asked Natalia.

Her kind eyes and shockingly clear English made the dingy beach we had just landed on and Soviet-era background of Komsomolsk Na Amure feel suddenly more welcoming. I had asked myself a similar question many times during the two weeks before our arrival to this far far eastern town in the absolute middle of nowhere Russia. It was shocking to hear someone acknowledge this aloud. Yet despite, and perhaps because of, all we had seen, feared and struggled through, we replied without hesitation: "We think the Amur River is incredibly special-like nowhere else in the world."
