Commons Connections

November 2013

The holiday season is here. It's a season of celebration, generosity and reflection. I want to thank you for partnering with Chicago Commons and enabling us to grow and create impact in the communities we serve.

Because of you, Chicago Commons has experienced a successful 2013.
  • 2013 Pour Out Your Heart increased profits by 20 percent from the previous year
  • Absorbed the Center for Working Families from Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)
  • Became one of the largest senior service providers in Chicago
    • Our Home Care program now has the ability to serve 1,400 seniors, and we opened a new Adult Day Service center.
  • Expanded our funder base with the addition of new corporate and foundation support
  • Lead partner with Brian Piccolo Specialty School
As you can see we have much to be thankful for, and we couldn't do it without our donors, volunteers, partners and friends. We hope during this season of giving you will continue to help us bring holiday cheer to the hundreds of families in West Humboldt Park, Pilsen, Back of the Yards/New City and Grand Boulevard/Bronzeville.

Have a happy, healthy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Betsy Altman

New Board Member

We are thrilled to announce that Philip B. Kenny, Jr., of Willis Group, Chicago, has joined the Chicago Commons Board of Directors!

Macy's Operation Happy Children

Tuesday, we participated in  Macy's Operation Happy Children. For the past six years Commons has been the Chicago non-profit partner. Nearly 200 children from four of our child development centers got a jump start on the holiday season at Macy's on State Street. Children enjoyed breakfast in Macy's Walnut Room with entertainment from elves and face painter, met with Santa Claus, mailed their Christmas lists, and left with a shopping bag full of presents. Thank you to Macy's for the continuation of this wonderful partnership.

Pour Out Your Heart

On Saturday, November 2, we hosted our annual wine tasting event Pour Out Your Heart. Presented by Martina Cartage, Inc. and Waste Management, our 2013 event raised nearly $130,000 exceeding our 2012 event as well as your goal for this year!  Thank you to our corporate sponsors, individual donors, staff and volunteers for making it one of our most successful.

National Safety Award

Earlier this month the Met Life Foundation honored the Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation and the Chicago Police Department for their partnership to improve community safety in West Humboldt Park. They received a $20,000 Community-Police Partnership Award from a program administered by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), in which Chicago Commons is a partner.

Over the last 10 years, Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation and the Chicago Police Department have worked on initiatives including encouraging Bickerdike housing tenants to attend and/or lead their local Community Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) meetings. Chicago Commons is also part of the Humboldt Park Safety Committee in which Bickerdike also supported. Congratulations to everyone on their hard work!
