The Madison Central Public Library project was an expansion and remodel that utilized the existing structure and retained approximately 50% of the original exterior in the process of transforming the 1960s building to represent 21st century library design trends. The project is currently pursuing LEED Silver certification.tour

Large glazed curtain walls were cut in to the existing exterior to substantially increase daylighting. The under-utilized lower level was opened up to receive natural light and transformed into a playful children's area complete with radiant heat floors and play nooks under the stairs.

The first and second floors have been completely remodeled, with collaboration and private spaces, an elevated teen area, and raised access floors for flexibility and to feature the original coffered structure. The 1965 Aaron Bohrod mural on the second floor was protected in place during construction and is now prominently displayed at eye level due to the raised floors.AIAWI Emerging Professionals

There was an addition on the third floor that added a patio to enjoy the large green roof , large meeting rooms, new offices, an art gallery and the Madison Room, a grand space for public events.

Design Thinking

Monday, October 28, Lecture Hall

Presented by Kohler Design Team - Led by Mary Reid, VP Industrial Design, K&B Americas, Kohler Co.

What John Michael Kohler saw in 1873 when he looked at a cast iron horse trough was the bathtub that launched a global plumbing company. That pioneering spirit of ingenuity - the kind that sees a bathing revolution in a horse trough - has defined Kohler Co. from its earliest days. Come hear what inspires the design engineers today at Kohler, and what keeps them on the leading edge of design and technology in both product and process.
