A Leap of Faith
The Next Phase of Construction Will Be Coming Soon!

The Growing For Tomorrow Building Group met for the first time on October 9, 2012.   The members of the group were selected for their experience, individual expertise, and willingness to commit to this project on behalf of the Congregation.  The concerns of the members and friends of this church have been heard and addressed on many levels by the group, comprised of:  Ron Castor, Jim Dixon, Pete Heberling, Barbara Kavalek, Joseph Kavalek,  Karl Peterson, Carolyn Reynolds, Joyce Vaughn, Terry Wagner and Pastor Jean Pinto.

The Challenge: was to address major concerns of the Congregation regarding renovations, in order of priority, as funds become available.

Peter Dunham of Dunham design Construction, LLC was selected as the builder and George Fett was later chosen as the Architect.  Both have worked closely with the Town on prior projects and are familiar with our church.

On January 29, 2013 we held our second meeting and the architect brought forth drawings which were very favorably received by the group.  He had addressed the concerns and ideas we expressed to him, and along with the builder came up with a schematic. We chose the renovation of the church entry, stairway in particular because of difficulties people have had and numerous injuries.  In order for us to provide a safe entry into the church, we needed to go to the Town and apply for a variance due to the allocation of parking spaces.  In addition the builder identified structural issues within the narthex, i.e. roof and beam deficiencies, which have to be addressed before proceeding with any renovations.  The estimated cost of the project came in at $326,000 - $350,000 (and included a built-in handicapped ramp).   The funds are not there!

Joe and Karl were asked to go back to the builder and see what could be done with the funds available now.  A list of priorities was established: Entry stairs - to the Narthex, New Front Doors, Asbestos and Lead Removal, Roof Repair including hanging beam, Popcorn Ceiling Replacement, New Flooring in the Narthex, and repair existing handicap ramp.

Mission accomplished:  as of the July 10th Meeting the total cost for the above work will now be $105,000 - $130,000.  We will be able to pay this and not borrow any money.  All work to date has been paid for. It is our hope that the remaining work could be done as funds become available.

We have recapped for you, where we've been and where we are going in the foreseeable future.  Now that we have a plan of action and an agreed to price we are communicating our progress to you via this media and will shortly send a letter to every member and friend of this Congregation.

In His Service,

Joseph Kavalek, Chairman

Karl Peterson, Co-Chairman

Jean Pinto, Pastor

Highway Clean Up

United Church, Changing Lives

Curly Rentner (on left with Tom Zeyack and Benita Rommel after the highway cleanup) talks about how the church has made a difference in his life.

They are not saints.  Who are these people? Why do they do it? How do they find time?

They may not be saints, but they do saintly work when they carry out God's will for our church.

I never really thought about it much until I was given the opportunity to be part of it!
I say "opportunity" because I did not volunteer.  It was either the pastor or a committee member asking me to get involved.  They had an "opportunity" for me.  My life has become a journey of opportunities.  Most of what the Lord needs us to do are not of our planning.  I try to do what's in front of me.  Many times it's God's plan for my day.

How do they find time?  Let me share my experience.  Whenever I squeeze time into my schedule for God, he sees that those items that made me too busy all get handled!

When it came to serving the Lord, my heart would say, "Yes," but my mouth said, "No." I'm not sure what came first, my renewal of faith or the action of serving. My faith experience has not been a straight line!

I love my faith in God and I never thought that doing the work of the church would strengthen it so much.  My spiritual needs were met when I made the decision to get involved.

There is no question in my mind that every person who enters our church has a God given talent that they can put to work for Him!

My greatest source of faith and knowledge of how the Lord works in and through us is in the church service.  It's there that I hear what I need  It's there that I am inspired to know and carry out His will!

As well as the church service our adult Sunday School provides a setting for a discussion of what it is that Jesus taught (with free coffee and donuts).

Oh! And my faith has added new words and phrases to my vocabulary: Grace, Gratitude, Humble, Blessed, Daily Bread, Not as the World sees it, Spirit of God.

God Bless!

September Mission: Princeton Seminary
Princeton Theological Seminary prepares women and men to serve Jesus Christ in ministries marked by faith, integrity, scholarship, competence, compassion, and joy, equipping them for leadership worldwide in congregations and the larger church, in classrooms and the academy, and in the public arena.

A professional and graduate school of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Seminary stands within the Reformed tradition, affirming the sovereignty of the triune God over all creation, the Gospel of Jesus Christ as God's saving word for all people, the renewing power of the word and Spirit in all of life, and the unity of Christ's servant church throughout the world. This tradition shapes the instruction, research, practical training, and continuing education provided by the Seminary, as well as the theological scholarship it promotes.

Donations to mission in September will go to PTS.  Thank you for your generosity.
Special Thank You

Our final 9:30 summer worship service will be next Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, and I want to express my thanks and gratitude to all who have shared their musical gifts with us during summer worship.  We have had a variety of music, from traditional to contemporary, as well as vocalists and instrumentalist, enriching our summer worship.  A huge thank you to the following summer musicians:  Bob Clendening, Bob Conner, Rhea Mucha, Jean Pinto, Marietta Burnett, Dave Carle, Melissa McAnlis, Women's Choir, Greg Foster, Bill Beitmann, and Bill Darnell.

Sincerely, Marilyn Machmer

UPMen'sBreakfast
The United Presbyterian Men's Group will meet for breakfast on Saturday, September 21st at 9:00 AM, place to be determined.  Sign up in the Narthex by September 15th.
Garden Club
Join our New Garden Club!
Do you like to be in the great outdoors, enjoying the beauty of creation?  Would you like your church grounds to be an oasis in our community and an honor to God?  If so, join our new Garden Club.  The Facilities Ministry Team is putting together a list of the gardening chores that need to be done on a regular basis.  They are recruiting teams to volunteer to take on responsibility for the grounds a week at a time.  Right now four teams of two have volunteered, which means each team will be responsible for one week per month.  The more teams we recruit, the fewer weeks each team will need to work.  Also, the more people on each team, the faster the work will get done.  If you are interested in joining the Garden Club, sign up in the Narthex or speak with Ron Castor (587-5049).
Manse Room
Manse Makeover Continues In an effort to catch up on deferred maintenance, the Facilities Team has been sprucing up the manse.  Last summer the Teller's bathroom was redone and earlier this summer the kitchen was renovated. Now the room which had once been used to house the banners has been painted.  We are grateful to Noah Pinto for painting and Tom Kelly for painting the trim and installing a new light fixture.  If you enjoy fix-up, Tom and the Facilities Team can use you.  We have lots of projects to do, so speak with Tom to join up.
A Closer Walk
Twenty Go on Retreat
The Youth Group and several alumni participated in "A Closer Walk," the Christian retreat for young people held at Wildwood, NJ, from August 1-3.  The retreat included inspirational speakers, live contemporary Christian music, and all the attractions of Morey's Pier and the boardwalk.  Thanks to the Men's Group who helped sponsor the event and to all who helped support the Youth in their fundraising efforts.  Thanks also to Dan Mucha, Megan Gadsby, Jean Pinto, and Beth and Ed Cass who chauffeured and chaperoned.
