Homecoming 2013:
Mean Green on the Big Screen

Homecoming 2013 will take place from November 4-9. This year's theme, selected by the students on the Homecoming Crew, is "Mean Green on the Big Screen," a nod to Hollywood and film. Mean Green fans can attend and particpate in traditional Homecoming events, such as Bonfire and the Parade. The week's activities end with the Mean Green taking on UT-El Paso at Apogee Stadium. Here's a full schedule of the Homecoming Week activities.

Please join us, as representatives for our UNT Parent Association, in "walking" the UNT parade route. This year we are excited to have our first float entered in the parade.

A big "thank you" to Cindy and Matt Cravey, for donating their truck, trailer and decorations.  Judging of our float will start at 7:30 AM and we ask that you arrive no later than 8:00 AM so you will have ample time to find parking and be ready to go for the start of the parade at 9:00 AM.

Please come dressed in your green and white. Funny hats, glasses, hair and noise makers assists in making our float even better and will be counted towards the judging. Noisemakers are welcomed with the exception of air horns.  We will have footballs and green beads to distribute and ask that you please bring candy to distribute along the parade route.  It should be noted the candy and give away's must be "handed out" along the parade route and not thrown.

If you are interested in participating in the parade, please email [email protected]!

A Word from the New Parent Association President

It is an honor to be writing to you as the incoming president of the UNT Parent Association.  We have an exciting year ahead!   Having been a UNT parent for going on four years now I have had the honor of watching the University and the Parent Association grow and expand its reach.  We currently have over 400 members on Facebook and over 500 new Parent Association members so far this year.  Our 2013-2014 board is very involved and ready to serve.  We appreciate them being willing to put forth their time and effort to help the Parent Association grow and serve you, the parents.  Our 2013-2014 board members are Tony Hill, President-Elect; Wendy Lay, Vice President; Sharon Wainscott, Treasurer; Mark Grayson, Secretary; Stephen Humenesky, Parliamentarian; Teresa Tavares, Historian, and Elizabeth Cheney, Past President.  We also appreciate the wonderful volunteers who have assisted us with Goodie Box Stuffing, Parent Orientation, Summer Send-Off Parties and other events.  It is your volunteer hours that allow us to assist all of the parents at UNT and help them to feel welcome and secure.  We also must thank Catherine Olivarez, our Coordinator for Parent Programs, who along with her staff, help support the UNT Parent Association by putting in long hours and days and are always ready to respond to the PA needs.  The Parent Programs office is developing our website to include capabilities of applying and renewing membership online, which was one of the areas recommended by our membership committee. This website will also include the option to view and purchase PA merchandise online.

I have been asked multiple times, "Why I should join the Parent Association?"I inform parents that as the mother of senior James Kantner, and freshman Keith Kantner, the PA has allowed me to be aware of campus activities, campus news, registration deadlines, opportunities for student leadership positions, and special programs hosted by offices such as the Learning Center, which have supported the success and well-being of my sons, and much more.I also can't forget our random draw scholarships of $500, $1000 academic scholarships, roadside assistance, UNT calendar, etc.The Parent Association has also allowed me to feel that we are contributing to promoting UNT as we wear their colors and participate in community events, thus making our children's education more valuable with the community at large. Finally, it has allowed me to develop friendships with other parents whose children are also jumping on this train of success that UNT offers.

We have some wonderful fun events just around the corner that I cannot wait to see you at.Mark your calendars and join us for the Homecoming Parade as we walk the parade route with our first ever float entry.

Remember, Goodie Box Stuffing is November 23 at 9:00 A.M. at the UNT Alumni Center. We will stuff boxes of treats for our students to enjoy during finals as we enjoy fellowship and refreshments. Volunteer to help. Directly following Goodie Box Stuffing will be a Tailgate Party at the Stadium until 2:00 P.M. Bring your snacks and drinks as we watch the football team and band march into the stadium. You might even get your picture taken with Scrappy! Kick-off for the game is at 2:30 pm.

Please know that we are always open to listening to you, our members, about your needs and concerns. You can reach out to us on our Facebook page, UNT Parent Association, or at [email protected]. I look forward to serving you.

Sheri Kantner

President

Goodie Box Stuffing

Parent Association members will be stuffing Finals Goodie Boxes at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23 at the UNT Alumni Center in the Gateway Center. Because we will be stuffing hundred of goodie boxes, we need as many volunteers as possible. If you have not signed up to volunteer for goodie box stuffing, please click here or email [email protected].

There are several areas to park near the Alumni Center, including Fouts Field (the stadium). Because there is UNT Football game there will be a $10 fee to park at Fouts Field. Please note that the PA will be tailgating for the football game, so you are more than welcome to stick around and join us.

We look forward to seeing you there, and thank you in advance for showing our students how much we care!

Welcoming Your College Student Home

"Your college student is coming home for his first real visit since he headed off to college. You're excited - but also a bit nervous about what to expect. You know that he has changed - increased independence and responsibility are goals of the college experience. But you may not be sure how this increased independence will affect your relationship. Your college student is probably nervous, too. He can't wait to come home to show off his new found independence, but he's not sure how he will fit in with the family now." - College Parents of America
