What's the ROI from Programs to Reduce Avoidable ER Visits? This Week's Challenge: There are many motivators to reduce avoidable ER visits: quality improvement, core measure metrics, reimbursement and incentives, cost trend, accreditation and recognition of ACOs and PCMHs, to name a few. We wanted to see what ROI was generated by programs to reduce avoidable ER visits.

What We Learned: HIN's Reducing Avoidable ER Visits e-survey captured how 134 healthcare organizations are working to staunch the flow and expense of avoidable ED use and point low-acuity patients in the direction of appropriate care. According to survey respondents, the following ROI was generated by their programs:

  • Don't know: 44.4 percent

  • Too early to tell: 37.8 percent

  • Less than 2:1: 6.7 percent

  • Between 3:1 and 4:1: 4.4 percent

  • Between 2:1 and 3:1: 4.4 percent

  • Higher than 4:1: 2.2 percent
