Canada-A Global Power

The Canadian Produce Marketing Association's 88 years of leadership will once again produce the Fresh Success Trade show which will take place in Toronto from April 14 to 17th.

The produce supply chain in Canada contributes approximately $9 billion annually in measurable economic activity in Canada, and provides direct employment to well over 90,000 people. This Annual Convention and Trade Show is the largest of its kind in Canada and an important vehicle for change, both within the industry and the Canadian marketplace.

In honor of this important industry driver, content for our communication tool this month discusses a number of things of interest in the land of the maple leaf.

A Vibrant and Dynamic Marketplace

Canada is the world's eleventh-largest economy with a 2012 nominal GDP of approximately US$1.77 trillion and is one of the world's top ten trading nations, with a highly globalized economy. In 2008, Canada's imported goods were worth over $442.9 billion, of which $280.8 billion originated from the United States, $11.7 billion from Japan, and $11.3 billion from the United Kingdom.

Since the early 20th century, the growth of Canada's manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the nation from a largely rural economy to an urbanized, industrial one. Like many other First World nations, the Canadian economy is dominated by the service industry which employs about three-quarters of the country's workforce. However, Canada is unusual among developed countries in the importance of its primary sector, in which the logging and petroleum industries are two of the most prominent components.

Canada is one of the few developed nations that are net exporters of energy. Atlantic Canada possesses vast deposits of natural gas, and Alberta also hosts large oil and gas resources. The immense Athabasca oil sands give Canada the world's second-largest proven oil reserves after Saudi Arabia. Canada is additionally one of the world's largest suppliers of agricultural products; the Canadian Prairies are one of the most important global producers of wheat, canola, and other grains. Canada is a major producer of zinc and uranium, and is a leading exporter of many other minerals, such as gold, nickel, aluminum, and lead. Many towns in northern Canada, where agriculture is difficult, are sustainable because of nearby mines or sources of timber. Canada also has a sizable manufacturing sector centered in southern Ontario and Quebec, with automobiles and aeronautics representing particularly important industries.

Canada's economic integration with the United States has increased significantly since World War II. The Automotive Products Trade Agreement of 1965 opened Canada's borders to trade in the automobile manufacturing industry. In the 1970s, concerns over energy self-sufficiency and foreign ownership in the manufacturing sectors prompted Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government to enact the National Energy Program (NEP) and the Foreign Investment Review Agency. In the 1980s, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservatives abolished the NEP and changed the name of FIRA to "Investment Canada, in order to encourage foreign investment. The Canada - United States Free Trade Agreement(FTA) of 1988 eliminated tariffs between the two countries, while the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) expanded the free-trade zone to include Mexico in 1994. In the mid-1990s, Jean Chrtien's Liberal government began to post annual budgetary surpluses, and steadily paid down the national debt.

The federal government and many Canadian industries have also started to expand trade with emerging Asian markets, in an attempt to diversify exports; in 2011, Asia was Canada's second-largest export market, after the United States.

Canada's culture draws influences from its broad range of constituent nationalities, and policies that promote multiculturalism are constitutionally protected. In Quebec, cultural identity is strong, and many French-speaking commentators speak of a culture of Quebec that is distinct from English Canadian culture.

Historically, Canada has been influenced by British, French, and aboriginal cultures and traditions. Through their language, art and music, aboriginal peoples continue to influence the Canadian identity. Many Canadians value multiculturalism and see Canada as being inherently multicultural. American media and entertainment are popular, if not dominant, in English Canada; conversely, many Canadian cultural products and entertainers are successful in the United States and worldwide.

Canadians Trip On Flavors

A recent article by Kate Webb, from Metro Vancouver, explores a flavor tripping craze catching Canadians by storm. Miracle fruit, a plant indigenous to West Africa that blocks bitter flavor receptors and reacts to acidic foods by dramatically enhancing their sweetness causes lemons and limes to taste like candy, salt and vinegar potato chips taste like cookies. Canadians have been discovering the fruit and ordering it from Mberry a U.S. producer for popular "flavor tripping" parties. Party-goers are instructed to eat them slowly, without breaking the seed, and rolling the skin around in their mouths to coat the their tongues with the pulp. Then.... voila, flavor transformation takes place and the effects last for 15 to 45 minutes, depending on what one eats and drinks. Flavor tripping parties are apparently all the rage in British Columbia. Click here to view article
Little Gourmets In Training

In a recent article in the Montreal Gazette, Susan Schwartz discussed a local chef's love for teaching children how to love tasty and nutritious meals. The Garderie Pause Tendresse, is a downtown daycare centre in Montreal where owner and chef Houda Chebihi is passionate about her young charges eating well and eating right, where fish, mostly wild, is served twice each week, and the cuisine is Mediterranean - a simple, healthful and flavorful style of cooking that makes liberal use of olive oil and fresh herbs such as basil and flat-leaf parsley, cilantro and thyme. Garderie Pause Tenresse is where food is served with love and where the small gourmets-in-training eat with gusto - even those who are picky eaters at home.

"When they are little, children are open to new tastes: The goal is to let them discover those tastes," said Chebihi. "We are educating them; acquiring a refined palate is a part of their education, something they will take with them to adulthood." It is her mission - to develop those tiny palates. Every meal is prepared from scratch each morning and served warm at 11: 30 a.m. What she loves about Mediterranean cuisine is its flavor and simplicity and she loves food as fresh as possible. She focuses on simple preparation and on the quality of the products. This is such a healthy diet."

Houda Chebihi's Tips On How To Get Youngsters To Eat Well And Healthy

Ten tips from Houda Chebihi, chef at Garderie Pause Tendresse,

1. Serve simple fare: Use good ingredients and serve good food. For example salads: Teach the child to eat lettuce, just plain. On its own. they will get used to the taste. (Prepared vinaigrettes taste too sharp and acidic for tiny palates, says Chebihi.)

Roasted salmon, with a bit of Parmesan cheese. Stick with simple, good ingredients. It is gradually that you will train them and their palate.

2. Eat together, as a family.

3. Ensure that your child's plate is as colorful as possible. Really colorful. 4. Start young. Children as young as six or seven months can eat what the rest of the family is eating. It is by introducing foods when children are small that eating them becomes a habit.

5. If your child is a pasta lover, serve the pasta with sauted vegetables.

6. Mention their heroes: Tell them Spider-Man eats this or the child's best friend eats it. Explain that it is good for their health to eat good food, that it is important for them to be strong.

7. Don't insist too much that a child eat something they obviously don't want to eat. When we insist too much that a child eat, the child understands that they have found a way to get their parents' attention. Chebihi says don't fall into that trap.

8. If there's an item on the child's plate that they refuse to try, do not offer another choice. We feel guilty, but as soon as we make something else, we're done. (Kids know this. We should, too).

9. Remember that positive reinforcement is your friend. When the child does eat, say for example, bravo, we are proud of you. We are proud that you have understood the importance of eating well.

10. Stay away from the wrong kind of snacks. Some parents give their children juice, cookies or chips as snacks. Don't. It cuts the appetite. Remember that children have small stomachs. A banana or another fruit is all right - something that is good. Avoid juice at the table. We have to teach our children to have water at the table during meals.

Sustainable Practices Woven Into The Fabric Of Life At Limoneira Ranch

In 2004, Limoneira Company created a partnership with Agromin Corporation, a green waste recycler to cities, counties and commercial growers to transform green waste into safe and cost effective compost and mulches for use in agricultural production and community projects.

A 10 acre facility on Limoneira property receives over 200 tons a day of this material that would otherwise be transported to landfills.

This partnership helps satisfy California AB 939, the Integrated Waste Management Act that mandates our cities and counties to divert 50% of their green waste from landfills. The end-product produced at this facility helps us and other growers to significantly reduce the use of water, herbicides and fertilizers.

The Process ("The Dirt on Dirt" seems to cut into the middle of this "The Process" segment)

* Green waste is received from consumers and commercial construction users from the entire Heritage Valley (Santa Paula to Piru).

* An average of 200 tons/day processed 5-6 days a week on 12 acres at Limoneira's Orchard Farm facility between Santa Paula and Ventura. Peak in-take July, low January.

* 70% (140 tons) is green waste -yard trimmings, grass, etc. and 30% (60 tons) construction materials (wood).

* Green waste contains too much nitrogen for optimal agricultural production. The carbon from construction material is needed to optimize this agricultural mixture.

The resulting Agromin mixture provides:

* A healthier root system for the trees in Limoneira orchards for more efficient nutrient uptake.

* Reduction in agricultural inputs:

fertilizers (primarily nitrogen)

herbicides (<20%)

water (<33%)

* Virtual elimination of soil erosion

* Healthier soil through the addition of organic matter for long term viability

* Less green waste and construction material in landfills thus reducing 38% of greenhouse gases emitted from landfills

The Dirt On Dirt

A circle of life, inter-dependence, balance and renewal. Everything we hold dear is contained within, dependent upon, and connected to this circle. Soil is the source and destination of all.

In today's virtual world, too many of us have lost the ancient awareness of our connection to soil--forgetting that our health, livelihood and well being are all inextricably linked to it. This lost connection to our planet's living skin lies at the root of soil's current global depletion crisis, along with the other imbalances that our biosphere is now showing us.

The solution is also a circle ... a circle of responsibility, sustainability, and innovation. Soil sustainability requires a balance between what society demands from soil and nature's capacity to meet that demand. The solution begins with regained awareness. Given the right knowledge and product choices, every individual can make the decision to play a role in returning balance to the circle. Agromin is dedicated to empowering that choice--a dedication that reflects across every aspect of our company.

* This mixture shrinks by 30-40% depending upon the moisture content of material and time of year through a meticulous composting process. The material is spread in 6' height "wind-rows" and each row is turned weekly with the addition of moisture for approximately 60 days to aid the composting process.

* By maintaining these strict standards, we ensure the elimination of any potential viral infection and weed seeds from the material that would be harmful in the orchards/fields.

* Limoneira's orchards are testing bi-annually for nutrient content in the soil. Leaf analysis is also performed. Depending upon specific block needs, approximately 50-200 tons per acre is spread on the fields to enhance growing conditions and fruit quality.

Limoneira annually places over 35,000 tons of mulch on only one of its farms in Ventura County. After 3 years, only 20% of the area of this one farm has been introduced to this process. Therefore, many more potential benefits can be achieved
