Commons Connections

October 2013

Fall has finally arrived. For us that means our annual wine tasting event Pour Out Your Heart for Commons (POYH) is just around the corner! This year's event will as always feature fabulous wines from around the globe, sweet soul music from the band Brooke and the Nice Things, and a silent auction with items including Tom Ford sunglasses and a signed hockey stick from the Chicago Blackhawks

All proceeds from POYH support our work, and 92 cents of every dollar is invested into our programs that provide support to 3,000 families through child development, youth programming, adult education and senior care.

Ticket and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Visit our website for more information. We hope to celebrate with you on November 2!

Sincerely,

Betsy Altman

Interim Executive Director

Staff Updates
DeLizza Russell, Site Director West Adult Day Service

DeLizza brings compassion and dedication along with 11 years of experience in Adult Day Services. Having worked as a Site Director/ADS Supervisor she has experience managing multiple facilities. In her spare time, she leads a youth ministry at her church and is an assistant to the Pastor.

Vanessa Powell, Site Director Nia Family Center
Vanessa has worked in Early Childhood Education for nearly 30 years in various roles both inside and outside the classroom. At the beginning of October, Vanessa became Site Director at Nia Family Center. Prior to that, she worked at our Taylor Center for New Experiences for three years as a director. Although she has been employed at Commons for three years, her history with Commons started much earlier. Before relocating to another state, Vanessa worked with Commons for several years in the mid-90s as a teacher when Commons first opened Nia Family Center. Upon her return to Chicago she immediately began searching for positions again at Commons.

Vanessa is also currently enrolled at Erikson Graduate School of Early Childhood Education seeking her certification as an Infant Toddler Program Specialist.
New Funder
Mander Foundation, which is a new funder of Chicago Commons, generously awarded a grant to support the expansion of Center for Working Families (CWF) and its efforts in West Humboldt Park.  We are grateful for this new relationship and looking forward to the expansion of our program.
