NEWS AND RESOURCES
Covering the 21st Century Library
The Chicago Tribune is exploring what the public library will look like as a center for community engagement in 2020 and beyond.  With Chicagoland libraries as a starting point, a recent feature story reports from cities as far afield as McAllen, TX and New York, NY and covers issues of library space, design and the emergence of digital studios for people of all ages as well as "tech-rich teen spaces."

IMLS Posts a Banner Year
The Institute for Museum & Libraries Services is the federal agency whose mission is to "...advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement through grant making, research, policy development and national partnerships."  Read their newly released annual report and be amazed by their inspired leadership that helps libraries and museums serves people and communities locally, nationally and internationally. The IMLS budget for FY 14 is $227 million, roughly $7 million more than its previous year's budget and $1 million more than IMLS requested!

Libraries and Summer Learning
Libraries are emerging as players in the burgeoning national summer learning movement. The National Summer Learning Association is accepting nominations for its annual New York Life Excellence in Summer Award which recognizes outstanding summer programs that accelerate academic achievement and promote healthy development. Three $10,000 awards will be given, and the deadline is Friday, February 14.

Wikipedia and Libraries
Libraries and Wikipedia, the internet-based global research hub, have long shared an uneasy co-existence. Today, common ground is emerging as information-seekers increasingly use this internet resource as a starting point for research that leads them to deeper levels of inquiry. Library Journal reports on the Wikipedia Library, the open portal that leads to "...libraries, open access resources, pay-walled databases, digital reference tools and research experts."

MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Libraries and Community Engagement

The University of Nebraska-Omaha has selected Omaha Public Library (OPL), NE, as a partner in its Community Engagement Center (CEC) which opens in March. The library will share space with 17 other community organizations and will "...work toward the mission of contributing positively and measurably to the Omaha community's quality of life by creating, supporting and expanding mutually beneficial partnerships, engaged scholarship, and academic and student programming that create tomorrow's leaders and agents of change."

Executive Director Gary Wasdin says, "[Our] mission...can be better achieved by working collaboratively with other organizations. OPL staff working in the CEC will think and work strategically with a diverse group of people who share the common goal of making Omaha a great place to live, work and learn."

Turn the Page for Literacy

Last week, New Orleans Public Library, LA, under the leadership of Executive Director Charles Brown and in partnership with 10 regional parish libraries, launched the "Turn the Page" literacy campaign with the goal of making New Orleans the most literate city in the U.S. by the city's 300th birthday in 2018.

ULC Executive Board member Irvin Mayfield, who also serves on the Board of the New Orleans Public Library Foundation, led the celebratory kick-off jamming to the brassy sounds of the Crescent City. Watch the video and follow this exciting campaign on Facebook and Twitter.
