Dear Jones Community,

Practice SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test - October 14

In less than two weeks, Wednesday, October 14, Jones Juniors and Sophomores will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT, one of the most important practice tests available for college admissions. In addition to serving as a practice for the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT is the entry point for Juniors to qualify for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program, sponsored by the College Board. I had the privilege of serving on the National Advisory Board for the National Merit program for a number of years and got to see first hand the impact the program can have for students in the college admissions process.
The Juniors and Sophomores will attend from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM; Freshmen and Seniors will attend from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM with special programming for their respective grade levels. This is an important day for all students, so please encourage your students to be on time and ready for the the day's events.

A number of parents, especially of Juniors, have asked about the status of the ACT and whether it is going to be offered at school this year. We are waiting for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to make a decision which college admissions exam the state will support, the ACT or the SAT, and when it will be scheduled. As soon as we receive word regarding the state's decision, we will let you know. In the meantime, Juniors are free to take either test on national testing days at other sites in Chicago and surrounding areas. These are held on Saturdays throughout the school year. For more information, you can visit the ACT and SAT (College Board) websites.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at 773-534-8606 or [email protected].

Many thanks.

Sincerely,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.

JCP School Tour

Attention parents of current JCP students:

Has it been a while since you've visited campus? Do you wonder what your student's day is like? Would you like to come in for a tour to see classrooms in action?

Eric Fay, one of our assistant principals, invites you to visit the school on October 29th from 8:00am to 9:00am for a tour of campus. This tour is for current Jones families only and will give you a behind-the-scenes look at all of the wonderful happenings at Jones College Prep. Hope you can make it to this fun, casual tour of our school!

RSVP to [email protected].

 Parent Education Night

On November 3 at 7pm, FOJ will hold its first Parent Education Night of the year. Parent Education Nights address issues that affect teens and families in our culture and community.

Please join us in screening "Beyond Measure," the new film from the folks who made the influential "Race to Nowhere."

The screening will be held in the Robin Bennett Auditorium and will be followed by a Q&A sessions with principal Dr. Powers and other experts.

 Choir Concert

Join us for a murder mystery and dessert in the Kings Court (JCP Choir Room) where you will be taken back in time for an evening of Wassail, Dessert and INTRIGUE.

Our Chamber singers, dressed in period attire will scare    and serenade you with some drama and "Madrigals"; or as we like to call them, the "pop music" of the Renaissance!

Tickets are $15 and should be ordered by October 17 to assure an assigned seat. Tickets sold at the door will be "open seating" (not reserved).

Please click HERE to buy tickets on-line or log onto http://jcpmadrigal.bpt.me

 Annual Fund Kick-off
Friends of Jones has just kicked off its ANNUAL FUND campaign and we want you to know this: A gift to Friends of Jones is a gift to all of our students.

Annual Fund donations are used to fund special JCP School Logoinitiatives and projects that are not otherwise covered by the school's annual operating budget.  These range from extra computers to sports team bus transportation, choir uniforms, school furniture and library research subscriptions.

The Annual Fund is the largest giving priority as every family can participate and show their support.  A meaningful gift from you  -- whether that's $10 or thousands -- is meaningful to us.

The Jones community is a caring community committed to the excellence of their students and we hope to show others that's the case with a high level of family participation. Why? Because high participation allows us to advance our fundraising with corporate funders and sponsors.  Businesses invest when they see families invest.

Leadership giving levels from $500 and up are especially critical in reaching our fundraising goals each year. Please go to our WEBSITE to read more about the annual fund or click this LINK  to make your tax deductible donation today!

Fall Sports Report
A new JCP Eagles Athletics bulletin board has just been mounted in the main Jones lobby on the first floor, right next to the State Championship Cross Country trophy.

Thanks to all of the coaches and teams who sold
raffle tickets last spring which provided us with most of the funds to purchase the board, and to Friends of Jones for providing the rest of the money needed to allow Sports Boosters to complete the purchase.
Also, thanks to Dr. Powers and the JCP administration for their support and approval.

The bulletin board will display pictures, schedules, rosters and news of each team participating in that season.

Correspondents Wanted!
The Sports Boosters are looking for correspondents to send updates on each sports team to be published in the FOJ newsletter. We would like one parent representative for each team. If interested, please contact Julie Bedore at [email protected].
