A Letter from Jazz House Kids President & Founder Melissa Walker

President & Founder Melissa Walker, with husband and Jazz House Kids Artistic Director, Christian McBride

Dear families and friends,

We hope your New Year has gotten off to an exciting start and wish you all good things ahead! At the Jazz House, we've been humbled by the generous show of support over the past year. We  are thrilled to announce that we met 100% of our Year-End Campaign goal and are grateful to the 157 individuals, foundations and businesses that rallied behind our mission. WE THANK EACH OF YOU!!!

We are confident that 2016 will be a another tremendous year of growth, music education and performance for our students as we continue to touch lives through our classes at the Jazz House, our programming in the schools, and our work in the communities.

And what a better way to celebrate our mission than to witness it in action?  Please join us for our 2016 Winter Concert on Sunday, January 17 at Leshowitz Recital Hall in the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University We have three sets, beginning at 1:00pm, 3:30pm and 6:00pm.  Enjoy an action-packed music schedule, as performed by our pride and joy: our students ages 8 to 18.  Every day, these exceptional young musicians teach us important lessons about dedication, perseverance and passion, and it never ceases to amaze me how they continually strive to grow their level of musicianship.

We are ecstatic to have trumpeter Marcus Printup as our special guest this Sunday. Marcus is one of the most accomplished trumpeters of his generation and a longstanding member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He is  also a dedicated music educator and mentor. It is truly our honor to welcome him to Jazz House Kids and to share the stage with him.

Again, our best wishes in this brand new year.  We look forward to seeing you at our Winter Concert and throughout the year.

Swingin' with joy,

Melissa Walker
About our Winter Concert Special Guest
Marcus Printup

http://www.marcusprintup.net/about/

Born and raised in Conyers, Georgia, Marcus Printup's first musical experiences were hearing the fiery gospel music his parents sang in church. While attending the University of North Florida on a music scholarship, he won the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet Competition. In 1991 Printup's life changed when he met the great pianist Marcus Roberts, who became his mentor. Roberts introduced him to Wynton Marsalis, which led to Printup's induction into the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1993. Printup has recorded with Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Eric Reed, Madeleine Peyroux, Ted Nash, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon, and Roberts, among others.  In addition to his recordings as a sideman, Printup has 10 recordings as a leader. His most recent recording, Young Bloods (2015) features Jazz House Kids Alum Coleman Hughes." He made his screen debut in the 1999 movie Playing by Heart and recorded on the film's soundtrack. August 22 has been declared "Marcus Printup Day" in his hometown of Conyers, Georgia.

Jazz House Music Club students at JFK School in Newark play their Winter Concert!

John F. Kennedy School, Newark - A huge part of Jazz House Kids' mission is its work in the schools, where we work to bridge the gap in access to quality arts education, in districts that are in great need. Our work at  the John F. Kennedy School , a district wide middle-secondary special education school, provides a glowing example of just how impactful our work in the schools can be. Just last month, students in our Jazz House Vocal Summit Choir , led by master instructor Phil Bingham , and the Jazz House Band , led by Pascal method instructors Anja-Christin Nielsen and Lee Hogans , played a Winter Concert for their entire school. This program is funded by the Silver Family Foundation . We thank you!!
