THIS WEEK!  VISION AND HEARING SCREENING DAY VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED

Rockwell's Vision and Hearing Screening Day will be this
Thursday, January 14th.

All Rockwell students will have vision and hearing screening this Thursday, January 14th during the school day.  *If your child wears glasses, please make sure your child brings the glasses to school on Thursday to wear during the vision screening.  Screening is supervised by Lake Washington School District school nurses.  Parents will be contacted by the school nurse if there are any concerns needing additional follow-up outside of school.

UPDATE:  We are still in need of 5 morning shift parent volunteers, and 1 afternoon volunteer!!!

MANY parent volunteers are needed to make this day go smoothly for students and staff.  No experience is necessary.  School nurses from the district will train parent volunteers in screening.  A school nurse will recheck any child with a questionable screening result.  The only requirements are your time, willingness, and being an approved volunteer with the district.  Sorry, but no preschoolers/toddlers/infants are allowed to come along for this volunteer opportunity.

We are in need of volunteers for a morning shift (8:15-11:15am) or an afternoon shift (11:45am-2:00pm), or come for the full day (8:15am-2:00pm) for double the fun!  Lunch will be provided for full day volunteers.

You can sign up to volunteer here on the Rockwell PTA Website .

Please contact us  with any questions.

Thank you,
Jan Stemple and Karen Hernan
VHS Co-Chairs
TOO MUCH TRAFFIC - PLEASE START WALKING AGAIN
Now that it's winter, many people have been driving to school again (and not carpooling), leading to many tardy arrivals and traffic congestion backing up to the roundabout at 116th in the mornings. Tardy arrivals are a lot of work for the office and disruptive to the classroom.
  • Please consider walking again - even in the winter! Bundle up and enjoy the walk - rain or shine.
  • Organize a "walking school bus" in your neighborhood, trading off with other parents who will walk with the kids.
  • If you do drive, PLEASE carpool with other families.
  • If parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, do not block driveways or mailboxes.
  • Do NOT let your child jump out while waiting in the traffic line on the side of the road. It is extremely unsafe and against our drop-off rules.
HERITAGE NIGHT - FRIDAY JAN. 22nd
Rockwell's Heritage Night almost here!
It takes place on  Fri, Jan. 22nd  and is a wonderful opportunity for our families to learn more about our diverse community!

Countries with booths represented so far are:
Ukraine, Nepal, Burma, Philippines, Japan, Ireland, Israel, India, Norway, Kenya, and Pakistan.

We still have room for a few more countries - is there anyone out there from another European country, Australia, New Zealand or one of the many other countries in our big world who would like to represent?? Please email Jennifer and also sign up here if you can volunteer at Heritage Night.

Would you like to share a short performance from your culture for a few minutes in front of the group?  Maybe you or your child play the bagpipes, do the hula, or Irish step dancing?  We are still looking for a few more performances. Please email Jennifer if you're interested.

Heritage Night - Fri. Jan 22nd
6:30 - 8:30 pm ( not serving food this year, so please eat beforehand)
Rockwell Gym
  •  Celebrate traditions from around the world
  •  Enjoy displays and presentations from different countries
  •  Dress in clothing from your country of origin if you wish!
  •  Bring an interesting artifact from your country of origin to show  your friends during the sharing portion.
  •  Origami and other activities too
Thank you,
Jennifer Myrick/PTA CO-VP Events

WEBMASTER NEEDED FOR ROCKWELL PTA WEBSITE
2016 Webmaster Needed

Do you have an hour or so a week that you can give to Norman Rockwell?  We need a new webmaster as our current webmaster will be moving along to the middle school.  It is helpful if you have the ability to create PDF files and a very basic knowledge of HTML, but neither are required.  The time commitment is typically less than an hour a week except during the high volume times of program enrollment and the beginning of the school year. Work can be done any time during the day/week at your convenience.

Step forward now and take advantage of the chance to shadow the current webmaster for the next several months.

Contact Felice Nightengale for details!
NOMINATING COMMITTEE & OTHER ROLES NEED FILLING
  • PTA SEEKS NOMINATING COMMITTEE to help us fill board and chairperson roles for 2016. Can you help? Contact the Rockwell PTA Presidents (Cari Scotkin & Ellie O'Rourke) if you can serve on our Nominating Committee!
  • CURRENT CHAIRS - If you will be moving on from Rockwell or are unable to chair your current role in 2016, please try to find and train a replacement and let us know. Thank you!
  • For a list of all PTA roles (a few are still unfilled for 2015/16 school year) and to think about how you can contribute to our school community, please check here

SALMON IN THE CLASSROOM UPDATE
We now have CoHo eggs in the salmon tank!
Feel fee to come take a look and encourage your child to do the same. The eggs should start hatching in about 2 weeks. I'll be putting out a more detailed call later this month for volunteers to help with tank maintenance and/or supervise students in feeding the salmon fry. If you already know you want to help out feel free to email me.

Thanks,
Jeanie Hahn

HEALTH ROOM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Our Rockwell health room gets many visits from our students each day. If a parent volunteer isn't present to help the students our office staff must deal with these interruptions to their work day. The Rockwell staff does a wonderful job of taking care of our kids, but it would be wonderful if parent volunteers could help alleviate some of their work load and at the same time get to know many of our wonderful students.

Volunteering in the health room is a flexible volunteer position. Many volunteers help one day a week, but you can volunteer a couple times per month if that works better for your schedule. Volunteering in the health room is nice because volunteers set their own schedule. Most volunteers serve for 2 hours at a time, but if you only have an hour to give that is totally fine. The staff appreciates any amount of time you can give!

We will be scheduling a training for all interested volunteers soon. No previous medical training is necessary to volunteer! If you have any questions or you are interested but unsure, please contact
Tedra Stratton  and she can give you the scoop on what it is like to be a health room volunteer!

ROCKWELL RESTAURANT WEEK IS COMING!

ROCKWELL RESTAURANT WEEK IS DURING
CONFERENCE WEEK - JANUARY 25 - 29th
Half-day dismissal at 11:30 am on Tues, Thurs and Fri. provides a  perfect opportunity to eat lunch and/or dinner out with the kids, friends and family!

Local restaurants will contribute a portion (10-20%) of your dining total (not included: alcohol, tax and tip) to Rockwell PTA. The goal of this week is more than "just" raising funds. We hope to offer families quality time together, support a local establishment and build rapport within the community.

Parents/Guardians must bring the Rockwell Restaurant Week flyer (available as of January 20th) to the establishment on their participating night. We are fortunate to have so much support; we need to spread it out over the week! Stay tuned for additional information - more restaurants may participate! Here are
our current restaurants: The Commons Woodinville; Bushnell's Craft Brewing Co; Purple Cafe Woodinville; Frankie's Pizza and Pasta; Panera Bread - Redmond; Village Square Cafe and BJ's Restaurant - Redmond.

Please thank these restaurants for participating in Rockwell Restaurant Week and don't forget to tip your servers!

Thank YOU for supporting the PTA and taking time to spend with our Rockwell community.
