Farmer Interview

What’s new with our farmers?

Coger Farms and Greenhouses: We’ve been pulling carrots, harvesting broccoli rabe and mustard greens all fall and continuing this winter.

Samscott Orchards: Winter projects include fixing equipment, pruning apple trees, covering strawberry plants (to keep them warm through the winter), building a new irrigation pond.

Meadows Bee Farm is starting a Young Farmers Program, teaching children sustainable farming basics to teach them about food, how it grows and why they should love their farmer. We are also sponsoring the Farm to School movement so that children throughout Vermont grow food at school.

Motown Mushrooms made it into the news! Check out the article.

Jersey Girls Dairy: We are still concentrating on the quark cheese and educating the public on its versatility and health benefits (being low fat and from high-quality milk). Our butter is doing very well, and has consistently sold out. We are also further developing our whey drinks. We did a lemonade and an Arnold Palmer test run that had a super positive response. Carol is also cranking out the frozen, ready to thaw/bake quiches!!

Places to Ski Near New York City The snow is bound to hit NYC. Just in case you can’t get up to Vermont or way upstate New York for some skiing, here are some places to get out on the slopes for just the day or overnight.

Or for an overnight trip, not too far from the city is:
  • Windham Mountain is a ski resort located in the northern section of the Catskill Mountains.
  • Butternut Ski Area is located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, it’s just 2½ hours from NYC

For Cross Country Skiing, check out:
  • High Point is less than 1½ hours from the George Washington Bridge. You can rent all the equipment you need on-site

Hi Everyone,

2016, here we are! We had a great end of year. We moved apartments, spent Christmas kayaking in East Hampton and rang in the new year at Meadows Bee Educational Farm in Windham, Vermont, sitting by a bonfire in a teepee singing songs and playing instruments. Jack, our son, was in heaven! Makes you kind of want to rethink living in New York City. But I must admit, it was good to get back to my real life and do my job, getting people to understand the importance of eating real food.

I set some goals for the year for EAT FOOD CSA and hope you all can help us meet them. They are:
  • Build a larger group of members —if you bring someone on, we’ll give you one of our “new” 2016 products to try!
  • Offer more staple products from Vermont: Jersey Girls Dairy quiche and whey beverage, homemade pita bread, hummus, homemade energy bars and more.
  • Provide snacks in offices — if you are in an office and want to recommend us to your HR department as part of a wellness initiative, we’d love that.
  • Be more involved with food service at schools and hospitals. We’d appreciate any contacts or ideas you have to build these relationships.

Our next CSA is January 21 and 22. Check out our new products: pheasant breast from Cavendish Game Birds of Vermont and Jersey Girls Dairy quiche and whey drinks along with all of the sweet and savory quark. E-mail us if you have questions or want to place an order: [email protected].

We look forward to keeping you full of good food this year,

Chad
