Outgoing President's Message - Daniel Andersen, CFP®
Daniel Andersen, CFP®
Dear FPA of Northern California Members:

My membership with the FPA has been a blessing because it has allowed me to grow and learn in a way that has benefited my practice and my personal life. I've been able to sit with local, regional, and national experts and have heard and shared ideas which will shape the future of our association.

In my role on the board, I have been able to learn about our organizational structure and have had a great time working with leaders from around the region. I am confident that the groundwork that has been laid will continue to live on in the capable hands of our board. Some of our initiatives have included:
  • Increase the efficiency of our chapter through the use of technology
  • Increase membership through use of meetings and gatherings in locations other than our traditional location and time
  • Continue the legacy of generosity through Financial Planning Days
  • Increased focus on quality programming and not merely on CE's because CE's are a commodity in a highly competitive market space.
The programming for 2016 will continue with the excellence we saw in 2015. I encourage each of you to commit to your own continued excellence by prepaying for your annual meetings. If you have interest in improving yourself and our chapter through participation with the board, please let someone on the board know of your interest.

Dear Members:

John F. Kennedy once said " Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future."

Nothing could be truer as it relates to our profession of providing financial solutions to the public. I became a Registered Representative in 1992 and have since lived that quote year after year.

My name is Orlando Batturaro and I have the honor of being your chapter president for 2016 - undoubtedly another era of change (and opportunity!) for our industry and, more importantly, our clients. Whether you choose to focus on government policy, market volatility, healthcare, longevity, interest rates, or competition, one thing is certain: we will all be asked to adapt and grow. Fortunately, the Financial Planning Association is a resource you can turn to for a helping hand. The Northern California Chapter Board is dedicated to connecting you with support of the FPA, its members, sponsors and affiliated partners. Together, as a community, we are a formidable force that can make our clients thrive in 2016.

Here is just a sample of what you can expect from us next year:
  • Continue Daniel Andersen's and the 2015 Board's legacy of reaching out to all 200 of our chapter members with diverse meetings and events
  • Create opportunities to connect with our partner chapters in the Bay Area whose member totals exceed 1300 along with several reputable and generous sponsors
  • Build upon the strong foundation of community service in providing financial education to those in need
I look forward to working with the highly professional members of our chapter board to make 2016 a fantastic year for you and your clients!

Thank you to all who came to our Thirsty Thursday Event at Iron Horse Tavern on November 5, 2015.  We had a great turnout and a lot of fun!  Plus the food & drinks were delicious.

FPA is such a diverse group; the attendees included everyone from First Generation planners to Next-Gen. We look forward to seeing everyone at our Joint Social Mixer with Sacramento Estate Planning Estate on February 4, 2016!

Happy 2016! A new year is always a good time for reflection to think about what we accomplished in the previous year and what we would like to build upon, improve and accomplish in the year ahead. Looking back, I am so proud of everything that we accomplished under my tenure as the Pro Bono Director. Looking forward, I am excited for this new opportunity to take on the role of Programs Director. My goal is to continue to create a robust programs calendar filled with topics and presenters that you, our members, are interested in hearing. It would be incredible to have a roomful of our members at every meeting in 2016. Thank you for your topic suggestions so far. If you were at another event where you were impressed by the topic and/or presenter, please pass along their information.

And lastly, if you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in your community and the financial planning profession, I highly encourage you to get involved in whatever way your schedule allows. Come to the meetings and introduce yourself to the person sitting next you, come join the fun at one of our mixers, volunteer for a pro bono event, and/or join the FPANC board. Getting involved with the FPANC board has led to many opportunities that have helped me grow professionally and personally. I look forward to a great year of programs in 2016. See you then!

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year! I hope you had a successful 2015, and that this year will be even better. As a newcomer to the FPA board, I have some large shoes to fill as Pro-Bono Director. Jenny Hood has done an amazing job of helping lead our chapter and support some amazingly good causes. I plan on building on that success. As financial planners, we are fortunate to be given the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our clients. For that privilege, it is right that we occasionally give back. And it is my responsibility in this role to help facilitate opportunities for our members to do that.

I want our chapter to build on the great things we have already done for our community....great things such as Financial Planning Days and Junior Achievement. However, we must be realistic. We can't do everything. As successful professionals, I'm sure you are already involved in many good causes. I realize it can be a challenge to make additional commitments, especially for things you won't get paid for. I would contend, however, that it is those things we do as volunteers that help build us as a community, and as a profession.  Continue reading here

Advocacy
As you may know, FPA of California was formed in 2012 to be an advocate on behalf of our members and their clients regarding issues that impact our clients' financial success and the financial planning profession. In addition, FPA of CA seeks to be a resource for California's elected and appointed officials, offering an informed, professional perspective on legislative and regulatory issues.

FPA of CA is the coalition of thirteen California chapters of the Financial Planning Association and represents roughly 3,000 members and serves over 300 thousand California constituents. Each local chapter has one board member who sits on the council.

We have been working hard on establishing relationships with our elected officials and have had two successful "Day on the Hill" in Sacramento. We encourage you to attend the next one planned for March 8, 2016. We will be providing more information about how you can become involved. All members are welcome, and since the capitol is right in our own backyard, it makes it super easy to carve out time in your day to be a part of this event!  Continue reading here

Sponsorship
This is the year! I feel it! You are reading this and perhaps wondering why should I get involved and become a board member? I am too busy. I don't feel I am qualified. I don't know what to expect. I don't see how it will benefit my career. Well, I think that this is the year you take the chance to find out how you can impact your local chapter while at the same time grow and learn as a professional. Our chapter is filled with such great people who are all very generous with their wisdom and experience. And the more you become involved the more you will evolve into the best planner you can be. I can tell you that to volunteer as a board member is a very rewarding experience and one that won't be regretted. No matter if you are brand new and afraid, or been around the block and feel like you have been there/done that, we need you. We need the new planners with fresh ideas and thoughts. We need the experienced planners who can be invigorated and bring years of experience to share. No matter where your interest may lay, becoming a board member in order to represent your chapter is a rewarding experience! And what better way to bring in 2016 then taking that leap and say, "Yes I want to be an integral part of my chapter and make it the best it can be!"  Read on here
