Seasonal Affective Disorder is an onset of depression which is most common in winter but can occur with any seasonal change.
That means that it's the perfect time of year to take care of yourself and find ways to boost your mood in these shorter and colder days. Winter can be a great time to get out and do new activities like skiing and hockey, or to bundle up and enjoy walking or snowshoeing. But if you're someone who doesn't enjoy the cold outdoors and would rather do indoor activities to keep you busy try some of these activities:
Massage Therapy - Massage is a great way to help beat the winter blues. Booking a massage gives us something to look forward to on a dreary day! Not only do we get a general sense of well-being from massage therapy but by promoting relaxation and
decreasing our aches and pains, massage can make very positive changes in our levels of anxiety and depression.

Optimizing Your Health in Winter with Chinese Medicine

Now that it is truly Winter with subzero temperatures and snow covering the ground, it's time to talk about how to optimize your health in the Winter using Chinese Medicine.
Chinese medicine is founded on the principle that to live a healthy long life one must live in harmony with natural cycles and the seasons. According to Chinese medicine, there are five seasons- winter, spring, summer, late summer and fall. Each season has its own characteristics, and we must change our habits in order to seek balance with the changes in our external environment. Living in harmony with the seasons strengthens our body and prevents disease.
So what is meant by living in harmony with the seasons? Well, it means that we change our life style to match what is happening in the natural world. If you tap into the natural rhythms, you'd rise with the sun, sleep when it's dark, eat the foods that happen to grow in your area during that time of year, dress for the season, and engage in activities that are appropriate for the season.

I am reviewing a recent article found in the July 6 edition of First for Women that was a recap of a book titled
Dr. Mullin hails from John Hopkins and bases his program on research that found that certain strains of bacteria thrive on sugar and carbs and send brain triggering intense cravings that drive a sweet binge. Once fed, the bacteria pull the body further into a fat trap by producing toxins and signaling proteins that communicate with and change DNA, reprogramming the body to store-rather than burn-fat. So, our DNA expression can be changed by signals from gut bacteria.
