Siem Reap, Cambodia Travel Guide

Siem Reap, Cambodia has been a popular tourist destination for decades and takes you back in time by allowing you to visit many historical and religious sites. The name Siem Reap means Siam Defeated. The town of Siem Reap is often visited by tourists who want to visit the 12th-century temple complex called Angkor Wat but there's so much more to see in this town  Siem 2beyond the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat.
Some general tips to keep in mind is to bring American dollars as most items you'll buy here are listed in dollars. Tourism is thriving here so expect prices to be higher than other places in Cambodia. When planning your trip, keep in mind that the best time to visit is between December and March when temperatures are in the high 80s or low 90s and precipitation is rare. Also, when visiting the temples, the least crowded times are early mornings.
Now that you have the travel tips, here are the places we'd suggest visiting:
  • Angkor Wat is a very famous Buddhist temple built in the 12th century.
  • Baphuon is a large Buddhist temple built in the 11th century.
  • Angkor Thom, which was the former capital of the Khmer empire. While here, look for the ancient structures.
  • Known as the "Tomb Raider" temple, Ta Prohm is very popular among tourists.
  • Bayon Temple is also known as the "temple of many faces" and is worth a quick stop.
  • Banteay Srei is a temple that features intricate carvings. Siem 3
  • Located an hour away by taxi is the temple of Phnom Bok, which is reached by climbing up 635 steps. The walk up the stairs is worth it as you'll have a view of the Tonle Sap Lake, the Kulen Plateua, and a plethora of rice fields. This unrestored temple was built between the ninth and 10th centuries.
  • Explore the town of Siem Reap and stop by the Cambodian Cultural Village, which features a theme park and museum.
  • The floating villages that dot the large freshwater lake, Tonle Sap.
  • The town has a vast array of dining and cultural experiences. While here, try the rice wine called sraa, which was created by two Mauritius-French expatriates. Also, try a gourmet restaurant or walk through Siem Reap's Old Market to try local dishes or buy souvenirs.
The town of Siem Reap offers an excellent glimpse into ancient history - it's a definite must-see! Siem 4
