PARTICIPATE IN RISE SUNDAY AND REACH OUT TO AN ISOLATED SENIOR

A million Canadian seniors say they are lonely and have limited social interaction. For many, this feeling of isolation worsens during the winter. As part of a national awareness campaign called RISE (Reach Isolated Seniors Everywhere), HelpAge Canada introduces:
RISE Sunday
February 21, 2016

On RISE Sunday, HelpAge Canada is asking that you brighten the day of a senior in your life. Call them.... invite them to coffee.... go on an outing to a local museum. There are hundreds of ways to make a difference.

HelpAge Canada is hosting a contest for people who participate in RISE Sunday. Send a description and photo of you and your chosen senior enjoying time together to [email protected] or the Reach Isolated Seniors Everywhere Facebook page.

If your organization wishes to promote the contest, HelpAge Canada provides support materials: contest poster and information sheet, brochure with information on the risk factors of isolation and what can be done (these should be printed on a 11"x17" sheet with duplex feature, landscape style, and folded in half) and a media release. Space is provided for you to add your organization's logo and website information to the documents prior to distribution.

2015 WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON AGING REPORT

Every ten years a White House Conference on Aging is held to identify and advance actions to improve the quality of life of older Americans. The 2015 conference focused on four themes: retirement security, healthy aging (including aging in place and falls prevention), long-term services and supports (including support for caregivers) and elder justice (including financial exploitation).

The final report contains policy briefs on the four themes, stakeholder input gained from extensive consultations held in the year leading up to the conference, and information about initiatives addressing the identified themes. Although some of the information in the report relates specifically to American government policies and programs, the report may provide seeds of ideas for something similar that we can do in Canada.

  • Dr. Trevor Theman, Registrar of the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons
