A Note From Our
Executive Director
April is here, the sun is out and the Chamber staff is getting ready for State of the Hill on April 20th. Take a minute to purchase your ticket and join the Chamber board, members, staff and guests as we mix, mingle and discuss the year ahead.
Speaking of sunshine, have you hopped on light rail yet? If not, what are you waiting for!? 5 minutes from downtown and 4 minutes from Husky Stadium means we are seeing more customers, visitors and new faces exploring Capitol Hill, while residents and employees are skipping the bus or leaving their car at home. A number of businesses have mentioned increased foot traffic, and while it is too soon to tell, I would like to hear from you over the coming months if you are seeing more customers and increasing revenue. We know opening day was a success for many because the Chamber staff and volunteers handed out 300 red wall keepsakes and generated $4,471 in sales for Broadway area businesses. We still have red wall keepsakes so stay tuned on how you can get one if you missed us on opening day.

State of the Hill
This year's State of the Hill Address will be the first for our Executive Director, Sierra Hansen. The evening will be MC'd by local draglesquer, producer, and activist - The Lady B. We'll have an assortment of delicious bites from Lost Lake, Poquitos, and Big Mario's. DJ Blueyedsoul will be spinni
ng great tracks throughout the evening and the Awesome Witch of Rad will be offering guests intuitive readings. We will also be raffling off prizes from local businesses throughout the evening!
The state of the Hill event is a celebration of organizations and individuals who make Capitol Hill a fun, safe, diverse and vibrant place to visit, live and relax. The
Chamber will be presenting the 2015 Spirit Award to an individual,organi
zation or business that has shown an outstanding commitment to the Capitol Hill community. The Spirit Award represents the best of Capitol Hill through community service, excellence, and passion for this neighborhood.
Nominations will be accepted until April 5th and while the recipient does not need to be a Chamber member, you must be one to nominate. Send your nominations to [email protected] and make sure to let us know who they are and why they deserved to be recognized.

First Hill Streetcar Celebration
The First Hill Streetcar is now in regular revenue service. Use your ORCA card or buy a ticket at any streetcar station to pay your
fare. Save the date for the community celebration on May 12! More
free rides are coming this spring and summer as streetcar partners with community organizations to provide easy access to festivals such as Pioneer Square First Thursday, Capitol Hill Art Walk, Dragon Fest, Capitol Hill Block Party, and more!

Capitol Hill Tool Library Grand Opening

We are pleased to announce the grand opening of the Capitol Hill Tool Library, where the people are friendly, and things can be fixed. Come join us for sustainable community projects, classes, and community events, learning to DIY and have fun doing it! Don't know what a tool library is? Imagine borrowing a food dehydrator, a ladder, a fishing rod, much like you would borrow a book from SPL. Imagine learning how to fix your broken toaster, building a worm bin, preserving your summer bounty. Enjoy a local community of knowledgeable fixers, tool lending, and workshops at the new Capitol Hill Tool Library.

SDOT Parklet and
Streatery
Programs 
As warmer weather approaches and people look for places to spend time outside, the Seattle Department of Transportation is working to increase awareness of its Parklet and Streatery Programs among businesses and community groups.
Parklets and streateries are small-scale open spaces built in a few on-street parking spaces. They are an effective way to provide community-oriented gathering places while supporting businesses in Seattle's commercial districts. Parklets always operate as public spaces, whereas streateries provide local restaurants and bars with additional café seating areas during their hours of operation. Both types of installations are privately funded and maintained by a hosting business or community organization.

Let's Link to lunch on Capitol Hill or how about downtown for some shopping? Did you know you that we can Link to the airport and it's only 42 minutes from the new University of Washington Station? With ULink opening, Huskies will be able to take Sound Transit's Link light rail to and from University of Washington Station. Join us in April as we explore this new resource! We will have refreshments and bagels from event partner Eltana Wood-Fired Bagel Cafe, fun SWAG as well as an interactive scavenger hunt with cool prizes up for grabs! Bring a buddy or a group of friends as we head to Capitol Hill, downtown and other cool places. We will have Link Leaders on hand to help you get oriented and lead the way. Some leaders will ride back together by 12:30, but you are free to go back earlier or stay longer. There are two Let's Link events to choose from. Join us at one, the other or both! Let's Link! Dine Out for Mental Health
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Washington (
NAMI Washington) is teaming up
with Lost Lake Café & Lounge for a "Dine Out For Mental Health" 24-hour benefit event on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Lost Lake Café & Lounge, located at 1505 10th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98122. Ten percent of total sales for the entire day will go to support the work of NAMI Washington and its 23 affiliates around the state.
One in five adults and one in ten children in America experience a serious mental health condition each year. NAMI Washington's mission is to improve the quality of life for all those affected by mental illness. We do this by providing a statewide, unifying voice of advocacy and coordinating the delivery of education, support and recovery. We are the families, friends and individuals who work to increase research and eradicate the stigma and shame surrounding mental illness. NAMI is a three-tiered organization with a National office, a state office, and in Washington there are
23 local NAMI Affiliates
across the state. Working together NAMI Washington and our Affiliates provide classes, support groups and community presentation programs at no-cost to any member of the community. NAMI offers specialized programs for schools and teachers, middle and high school students, and Veterans.
