Saturday, April 2 at 7:00-9:00 p.m. - An Evening of Poetry and Music. In celebration of National Poetry Month this April, the Library and Karen Chase will be hosting an evening of Poetry and Music in conjunction with Mrs. Chase's photography exhibit "Natural Touch." Mrs. Chase will read some of her poetry, including her poem "FAMINE: Ireland 1845-49." Anyone who is interested in playing or reading their own or a favorite poem, is invited to join in and everyone is invited to come and listen. Refreshments will be served.

Wednesday, April 6 at 5:00-6:30 p.m. - Wellness Series: The Zika Virus and Other Current Epidemics with Dr. Gabriel Zatlin, M.D. Over the past few weeks media attention has focused on an outbreak of Zika virus in South and Central America and the Caribbean because of a concomitant increased incidence of abnormalities in newborns and symptoms of temporary paralysis (Gillian-Barre syndrome). There are concerns about traveling to these areas and whether Zika will spread to the continental U.S. Dr. Zatlin will provide current information available on these topics, including travel risks for other viruses as well such as dengue fever and chikungunya virus. Saturday, April 9 at 11:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. - College Planning Series. This workshop is the first of four sessions for any student or parent who needs information about the college admission process (making the right match, making a personal time line, writing the college essay, packaging yourself for college admission) should attend. This will be a hands-on workshop, so bring a laptop or tablet if you have one. This week's topic: Characteristics of Colleges and Making the Right Match answering questions about self-assessment; college characteristics including the differences between private and public colleges/universities, majors, financial aid/scholarships, etc.; and what characteristics are important to the applicant. This workshop is led by Carla Shere, Ed.D., an expert College Advisor with past admission experience. Please register.

Saturday, April 9 at 2:00 p.m. - Appalachian Trail: Walk on the Wild Side. Elaine LaBella, Kent resident, will share photos and experiences from maintaining the trail in Connecticut and from her 6-month Appalachian Trail hike from Georgia to Maine in 2004. She will take us through fourteen states and discuss the trail's history. She will tell us how and where to hike and help maintain the trail right here in Kent and surrounding areas. After a presentation of Elaine's photos and experiences, the floor will open to discussions, memories, questions all relating to our wonderful AT. Monday, April 11 at 2:30-4:30 p.m. - Color Your World. Come experience first of many coloring and relaxing programs for adults - the latest trend in relaxation - adult coloring books! Studies show coloring can have a calming effect on the adult mind and help to promote overall wellness. It is one of the latest ways in reducing stress, and not to mention, extremely popular. Wednesday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. - Gadgets & Things. Join us for a special workshop on in the Reading Room. You will learn about a variety of assistive devices such as magnifiers, phone amplifiers, a vibrating alarm clock, a smart pen and a talking watch, just to name a few. Your instructor is Charlene Wicks from the Western CT Area Agency on Aging. She will give a 30-minute demonstration of these gadgets and what they do. She is not selling them, the purpose of this program is to make people aware that these devices are available to help in everyday living. Free and open to the public. Please call to register.

Saturday, April 16 at 8:30 - 9:45 a.m. - Gentle Hatha Yoga with Barrie Kavasch, "with easy, practical yoga postures designed to strengthen balance and the back. We focus on "mindfulness" and "relaxation" along with building strong bodies through strengthening bones, joints, and muscles with classic stretches. April is Amnesty Month: As spring approaches, the Library will celebrate by forgiving all library fines during April: Amnesty Month. If you have "lost" items or overdue books, your fines will be forgiven if you return the items with a non-perishable food item which will be donated to the Kent Food Bank.

Art Exhibit: Photography Exhibit Natural World by Karen Chase will be on display in the Gallery from through April 30. All artwork is for sale.

National Library Week: April 10 - April 16: As libraries in communities, schools, and campuses nationwide celebrate National Library Week, so too, will the Kent Memorial Library. This will be a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians, library workers and most importantly, patrons. Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools; libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues. This year's national theme is Libraries Transform.

Mother's Day Basket Reading Contest. Beginning Wednesday, April 6 until Wednesday, May 4 all ages are welcome to win a chance at our Mother's Day Basket. Fill out a ticket for each book you read, listened to, or had read to you. For each book you have a chance at winning the basket! All ages welcome! (basket and tickets can be found inside the Library.)

Passport to Connecticut Libraries: Beginning on April 1 through April 30, the will be one of 124 Libraries to proudly participate in the Connecticut Library Association's Passport to Connecticut Libraries Program. To celebrate National Library Week during April, the Passport to Connecticut Libraries Program invites you to visit all of the participating Connecticut public Libraries. Each Library has its own architecture, vibe and collection to explore and browse! The program is open to adults and children, and the hope is that it encourages residents to explore the amazing diversity of our public libraries.
